Uniform and Non-uniform Velocity

Three cars each travel 200 m. One covers exactly the same distance every second, one surges and slows, and one goes round a circle at a perfectly steady speed. Which of them has a uniform velocity? The surprise on this page: the steady car on the circle does not – because velocity has a direction.

📖 What you need (pages 5 and 6 of this guide)

1. Three cars – Fig 2.5

– Details of three cars, each travelling 200 m. Observe the features of their motion and answer.

🧪 Three-car lab – watch the marks and the velocity arrows

Arrows show the velocity during the current second (arrow length ∝ size, 10 m/s ↔ 40 px). The faint arrows on the circle are car C's velocity at earlier whole seconds – same length, different directions. Car B's data stop at 4 s.

Textbook questions (page 32)

Q1. – Is the velocity of car A always the same? Why?

Yes. Car A moves in one direction along a straight road and its displacement is 10 m in every second, so its velocity stays 10 m/s in the same direction – a uniform velocity.
Why: equal displacements in equal intervals of time, without changing direction, mean the velocity (displacement per second) never changes.

Q2. – What about car B? Why?

No. Car B's displacements in successive seconds are 10 m, 20 m, 10 m, 20 m – unequal. Its velocity keeps changing between 10 m/s and 20 m/s: non-uniform velocity.
Why: the direction is the same, but the size of the displacement per second changes, so the size of the velocity changes.

2. Mud from a turning tyre

– Have you noticed mud flying off a spinning tyre on a monsoon road? Try it below with a bicycle turned upside down so its wheel spins in place.

🧪 Spinning wheel – where does the mud go?

Q3. – Does the mud fly off in the same direction every time?

No. Each drop leaves along the tangent to the wheel at the point where it lets go – a different direction for every point on the rim.
Why: at the moment it leaves, a drop keeps the velocity it had – and that velocity is along the circle's tangent at that point. So the direction of motion ചലനദിശ of something moving on a circle changes from instant to instant.

– If the direction of motion of an object keeps changing, its velocity keeps changing too.

Q4. – Is car C's velocity the same every second? Does its velocity change?

Its speed is the same (10 m every second), but its velocity changes – the direction of motion changes all the time. Car C has a non-uniform velocity.
Even though the size (speed) does not change, the change of direction changes the velocity. Look at the faint arrows on the circle in the lab.
⭐ Uniform and non-uniform velocity (textbook page 33)

If an object moving in one direction has equal displacements in equal intervals of time, it is in uniform velocity.

If the speed or the direction changes – even just one of them – the velocity changes. An object whose velocity changes is in non-uniform velocity.

3. Table 2.4 – classify the three cars

– Complete the table from Fig 2.5. Choose for each car:

Car B✓The size of the velocity changes (10 m, 20 m, 10 m, 20 m per second); the direction stays the same
Car C✓The size of the velocity does not change, but the direction changes

5. A bus leaving the stop – is the change the same every second?

ഓരോ സെക്കന്റിലേയും പ്രവേഗമാറ്റം ഒരുപോലെ ആയിരിക്കുമോ?The thinking girl: The velocity of a bus leaving a bus stop keeps changing. Will the change in velocity be the same every second?
🧪 Two drivers pull away from the stop
time (s)01234

Model numbers (not from the textbook). The smooth driver presses the accelerator evenly; the other one presses, eases off and presses again.

Not necessarily. It depends on how the driver uses the accelerator. The velocity of the bus changes every second in both cases, but for the smooth driver the change is the same each second (2 m/s), while for the other it is 3, 1, 3, 1 m/s.
Why this matters: how fast the velocity changes is a new physical quantity – acceleration ത്വരണം. Equal changes each second will be called uniform acceleration. That is the next page.
🌴 Kerala connection

Ride the Kochi Metro between two stations: for a short stretch in the middle the train runs straight at a steady speed – nearly uniform velocity – but pulling out of and into each station its velocity changes. A merry-go-round at a temple festival turns at a steady speed, yet the velocity of every horse on it keeps changing, because its direction changes. And in the monsoon, watch an autorickshaw's wheels on a wet road – the spray leaves along the tangent, just as in the lab.
