📖 Where each topic is explained

1 · Sodium in water (pp 69–70, Fig 4.1–4.2)

⚠️ Sodium reacts violently with water and can catch fire. This is a teacher demonstration only – never at home; goggles, a tiny piece, a safety screen.

We do many chemical reactions like this in the laboratory. What changes do we usually observe when chemical reactions take place?

(ചിത്രം 4.2) A dish ¾ full of water with two drops of phenolphthalein ഫിനോൾഫ്‌താലീൻ; a small piece of sodium is added carefully. What changes do you observe? (Fig 4.2)

What is the reason? Find it by evaluating the chemical equation.

When chemical changes take place, does the total mass of the substances change?

• Usual signs of a chemical reaction: a gas is given off, a colour change, a precipitate, heat or light, a new substance forms.
• Observations: sodium darts about on the surface, fizzes, may catch fire with a yellow flame, gets smaller and disappears; the water turns pink; the dish gets warm (heat is given out); a gas is released.
• Reason: 2Na + 2H₂O → 2NaOH + H₂↑. Sodium hydroxide, an alkali, forms – phenolphthalein is pink in alkali; the gas is hydrogen; the reaction gives out heat (an energy change
• Total mass: no, it does not change – this is tested in the next two experiments.

2 · Barium chloride and sodium sulphate on a balance (p 70, Fig 4.3–4.4)

When fuels or paper burn, the total mass seems to decrease. Is this correct?

20 mL BaCl₂ solution and 20 mL Na₂SO₄ solution in two beakers on an electronic balance ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് ബാലൻസ്: 92.95 g. One is poured into the other.

4.4) What can you see? (Fig 4.4)
After a while, note the reading again and compare. What did you find?
Is there any difference in total mass as a result of the reaction?
• Burning: it only seems so – the gaseous products escape into the air (answered fully in section 3).
1. A white precipitate അവക്ഷിപ്തം forms (barium sulphate).
2. The reading is still 92.95 g – the same as before.
3. No. BaCl₂ + Na₂SO₄ → BaSO₄↓ + 2NaCl – the total mass does not change.

3 · Zinc and hydrochloric acid with a balloon (pp 70–71, Fig 4.5–4.6)

About 20 mL dilute HCl in a conical flask, zinc pieces in a balloon tied to its mouth, on the balance (94.55 g). The zinc is dropped into the acid.

4.6) What can you see? (Fig 4.6)
Note the balance reading and compare it with the earlier one. What do you understand?
Which gas collects in the balloon?
What can you infer from these experiments?
Does the total mass change as a result of the reaction?
The main products of burning fuels and paper, carbon dioxide and water vapour, mix with the air. If they were collected without loss and weighed, what would we find?
1. Bubbles of gas form on the zinc and the balloon swells.
2. The reading is still 94.55 g – the mass has not changed.
3. Hydrogen: Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂↑ (the balloon traps it, so nothing escapes).
4. In a chemical reaction the total mass does not change.
5. No.
6. The total mass of the products would be equal to the total mass of the fuel (or paper) and the oxygen used – mass only seems lost because the gases escape.
Key idea (p 71, Lavoisier's law of conservation of mass മാസ് സംരക്ഷണനിയമം): in a chemical reaction the total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of the products.

4 · Why mass is conserved – Tables 4.1 and 4.2 (pp 71–72)

Why does the total mass not change in a chemical reaction?

Analyse Table 4.1 (2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O; H = 1 u, O = 16 u).

Evaluate the symbolic representation പ്രതീകാത്മക ചിത്രീകരണം of carbon and oxygen forming carbon dioxide (C 12 u). Complete Table 4.2 and write the conclusion.

Table 4.1 · 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
Total mass of the reactants
Total mass of the products
Table 4.2 · C + O₂ → CO₂
Total mass of the reactants12 u + 32 u = 44 u
Total mass of the products12 u + 16 u + 16 u = 44 u
When reactants combine in a fixed proportion, their atoms are only rearranged into new molecules. No atom is created or destroyed, so the number of atoms and the total mass stay the same. Conclusion for Table 4.2: 44 u = 44 u – the total mass of the reactants equals that of the products; mass is conserved.

5 · Methane burning (? box, p 73)

The symbolic picture shows methane burning in air to give water vapour and carbon dioxide. Write the equation. With H = 1 u, C = 12 u, O = 16 u, check whether the reaction obeys the law of conservation of mass.

CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O (the picture shows 1 CH₄ and 2 O₂ on the left, 1 CO₂ and 2 H₂O on the right).
Reactants: CH₄ = 12 + 4 × 1 = 16 u; 2O₂ = 2 × 32 = 64 u → total 80 u.
Products: CO₂ = 12 + 32 = 44 u; 2H₂O = 2 × 18 = 36 u → total 80 u.
80 u = 80 u → yes, the law of conservation of mass is obeyed.

6 · Writing molecules and counting atoms (p 73)

Oxygen and hydrogen are diatomic molecules. How do we write them with symbols? Oxygen ……, hydrogen ……
How many atoms in all are there in the water molecule (H₂O) they form?
Find the number of molecules and the total number of atoms in 5H₂O.
1. Oxygen O₂, hydrogen H₂.
2. 3 atoms (2 H + 1 O).
3. Total molecules 5 (the coefficient); total atoms 5 × 3 = 15 (10 H + 5 O).

7 · Balancing the equation for water – Tables 4.3, 4.4 and 4.5 (pp 73–74)

Step 1: H₂ + O₂ → H₂O. Look at Table 4.3.

Should not the number of oxygen atoms in the product also be 2? What is the way? What if we make the number of water molecules two?

The number of hydrogen atoms in the reactants must also be four. How? What if we make the hydrogen molecules 2?

TableEquationAtoms in the reactants അഭികാരകങ്ങളിലെ ആറ്റങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണംAtoms in the product ഉൽപന്നത്തിലെ ആറ്റങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം
4.3 (step 1)H₂ + O₂ → H₂OH = 2, O = 2H = 2, O = 1
4.4 (step 2)H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂OH = 2, O = 2H = 4, O = 2
4.5 (step 3)2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂OH = 4, O = 2H = 4, O = 2
Yes – oxygen must be 2 on both sides. We may not change H₂O to H₂O₂ (that is a different substance, hydrogen peroxide); we change only the coefficient: 2H₂O gives O = 2 (but now H = 4). Then 2H₂ makes H = 4 on the left. Balanced: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. Key idea (p 74): making the number of each kind of atom equal on both sides is balancing രാസസമവാക്യ സമീകരണം; the result is a balanced chemical equation സമീകൃത രാസസമവാക്യം.

8 · Balance these equations (? box, p 75)

Balance the equations and record them in your science diary: H₂ + I₂ → HI · Na + H₂O → NaOH + H₂ · Mg + HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂

Balanced equationCheck (left = right)
H₂ + I₂ → 2HIH 2 = 2 · I 2 = 2
2Na + 2H₂O → 2NaOH + H₂Na 2 = 2 · H 4 = 2 + 2 · O 2 = 2
Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂Mg 1 = 1 · H 2 = 2 · Cl 2 = 2
The book's worked examples for comparison: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO · H₂ + Cl₂ → 2HCl · Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂ · 4Al + 3O₂ → 2Al₂O₃ · N₂ + 3H₂ → 2NH₃. Side box (p 75): equations may also show the physical state ഭൗതികാവസ്ഥ, energy change and catalyst ഉൽപ്രേരകം: N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) →(Fe) 2NH₃(g) + heat. Practise in the balancer lab (page 4).

9 · Oxidation and reduction in sodium chloride (p 76)

In this reaction (sodium and chlorine forming NaCl), which atom gives away an electron and becomes a positive ion?
Which atom accepts an electron and becomes a negative ion?
1. Sodium: Na → Na⁺ + 1e⁻. Key idea: losing electrons is oxidation
2. Chlorine: Cl + 1e⁻ → Cl⁻. Gaining electrons is reduction
Then Na⁺ + Cl⁻ → NaCl. Metals generally lose electrons (K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Al – oxidation); non-metals generally gain (F, Cl, Br, O – reduction); Ag⁺ + e⁻ → Ag and Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu are reductions; I⁻ → I + e⁻ and S²⁻ → S + 2e⁻ are oxidations.

10 · Oxidising and reducing agents (pp 77–78)

2Na + Cl₂ → 2NaCl

Which atom is oxidised here?
Which atom helped the oxidation? (sodium / chlorine)
Which atom helped the reduction? (sodium / chlorine)
1. Sodium – it loses an electron.
2. Chlorine – it accepts the electron. Key idea: what helps oxidation is the oxidising agent ഓക്സീകാരി; it is itself reduced.
3. Sodium – it gives the electron. What helps reduction is the reducing agent നിരോക്സീകാരി; it is itself oxidised.
Same pattern in 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO: Mg is oxidised and is the reducing agent; O₂ is reduced and is the oxidising agent.

11 · The agents table (? box, p 78)

ചുവടെ നൽകിയിട്ടുള്ള രാസസമവാക്യങ്ങൾ വിലയിരുത്തി പട്ടിക പൂർത്തിയാക്കുക. Evaluate the equations and complete the table: 1) Mg + F₂ → MgF₂ 2) Ca + Cl₂ → CaCl₂ 3) 4Fe + 3O₂ → 2Fe₂O₃. Type the half-equations like F + 1e- -> F- (or just the symbol for the agents).

2Ca → Ca²⁺ + 2e⁻Cl + 1e⁻ → Cl⁻ClCa
3Fe → Fe³⁺ + 3e⁻O + 2e⁻ → O²⁻OFe

12 · Valency and oxidation number – Table 4.6 and MgO (p 79)

Evaluate Table 4.6. Can we tell from the valency whether an element gains or loses electrons in a reaction?

In MgO, magnesium is +2 and oxygen −2. What do you understand from this?

Element മൂലകംAtomic numberElectron configurationValency സംയോജകതOxidation number in its ionic compounds
Sodium (Na)112, 8, 11+1
Potassium (K)192, 8, 8, 11+1

Chlorine (Cl)172, 8, 71−1
Magnesium (Mg)122, 8, 22+2
Calcium (Ca)202, 8, 8, 22+2
Oxygen (O)82, 62−2
Aluminium (Al)132, 8, 33+3
• No – Na and F both have valency 1, but Na loses and F gains. The oxidation number (with its sign) tells us. Key idea (p 79): if all bonds are taken as ionic, the charge on each atom is its oxidation number ഓക്സിഡേഷൻ നമ്പർ (oxidation state ഓക്സീകരണാവസ്ഥ).
• MgO: in an ionic compound the oxidation number is the charge of the ion (Mg²⁺, O²⁻); the sign shows loss (+) or gain (−); and the sum is zero: +2 − 2 = 0. In covalent HF the pair is imagined on the more electronegative F: F −1, H +1. Key idea (p 80): sum in a compound = 0; elemental state = 0. Table 4.7: H, Na, K +1 · Ca +2 · Al +3 · F, Cl, Br, I −1 · O −2.

13 · Nitrogen in HNO₂ and NO₂ (? box, p 80)

Find the oxidation number of nitrogen in HNO₂ and NO₂. (Worked example in the book: HNO₃, (+1) + x + 3(−2) = 0 → x = +5.)

HNO₂: (+1) + (1 × x) + (−2 × 2) = 0 → +1 + x − 4 = 0 → x − 3 = 0 → x = +3.
NO₂: (1 × x) + (−2 × 2) = 0 → x − 4 = 0 → x = +4.

14 · Chromium and manganese (? box, p 81)

Find the oxidation number of chromium in Cr₂O₃. (Worked example: K₂Cr₂O₇, 2(+1) + 2x + 7(−2) = 0 → 2x = 12 → x = +6.)

Find the oxidation number of manganese in a) MnO₂ b) Mn₂O₇ c) KMnO₄ (O −2, K +1).

CompoundWorking (sum = 0)Oxidation number
Cr₂O₃2x + 3(−2) = 0 → 2x = 6Cr +3
MnO₂x + 2(−2) = 0 → x − 4 = 0Mn +4
Mn₂O₇2x + 7(−2) = 0 → 2x = 14Mn +7
KMnO₄(+1) + x + 4(−2) = 0 → x − 7 = 0Mn +7
Ghemical side box (compare MnO₂ and Mn₂O₇): in O=Mn=O manganese has 4 bond lines to oxygen (+4); in O₃Mn–O–MnO₃ each Mn has 3 double bonds and 1 single bond, 7 lines (+7). Sketches and a calculator: page 7.

15 · Oxidation number and redox: sodium chloride (pp 81–82)

2Na + Cl₂ → 2NaCl

What is the oxidation number of sodium and chlorine in the elemental state?
What happened to the oxidation number of sodium? (decreased / increased)
What happened to the oxidation number of chlorine?
In forming sodium chloride, which atom was oxidised?
Which is the oxidising agent? Why?
Which atom was reduced? Why?

1. 0 for both (elemental state മൂലകാവസ്ഥ).
2. Increased (കൂടി): 0 → +1. 3. Decreased (കുറഞ്ഞു): 0 → −1.
Key idea (p 82): an increase in oxidation number is oxidation; a decrease is reduction.
4. Sodium (its oxidation number increased).
5. Chlorine – it takes sodium's electron and so raises sodium's oxidation number; chlorine itself is reduced.
6. Chlorine – its oxidation number decreased from 0 to −1.
7. Sodium – it gives the electron to chlorine and is itself oxidised.

And the atom that was reduced?
1. Hydrogen (0 → +1). 2. Chlorine (0 → −1).
Key idea (p 83): oxidation and reduction take place at the same time – such reactions are redox reactions റിഡോക്സ് പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ; in a redox reaction the oxidising agent is reduced and the reducing agent is oxidised.
