Chapter 4 · Let us assessTextbook pages 84–86

Let Us Assess & Extended Activities – Solutions

All ten end-of-chapter questions with model answers. Equations are balanced step by step with a live atom tally, and the oxidation numbers are written above the symbols just as in the textbook, with arrows showing which atom is oxidised and which is reduced. Try every question yourself first: there are true/false buttons, a balancer, fill-in tables and a concept map you can fill by tapping or dragging. Then come the four extended activities തുടർപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ, shown as virtual teacher demonstrations, and a plan sheet for the field trip.

📖 What you need (pages 3–8 of this guide)

Oxidation numbers appear in small red numbers above the symbols. In the animations a green arrow above means the number went up (oxidation) and a red arrow below means it went down (reduction). A changed coefficient is shown in red. Parts marked go further are beyond the textbook.

Question 1 · Ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen

The unbalanced equation for the reaction in which nitrogen and hydrogen combine to form ammonia is given: N₂ + H₂ → NH₃

Balance the chemical equation.
Count the atoms of each kind in the reactants അഭികാരകങ്ങൾ and in the products ഉൽപന്നങ്ങൾ.
(സൂചന: അറ്റോമിക മാസ് H = 1u, N = 14u) If 28 g of nitrogen combines completely with 6 g of hydrogen, what will be the mass of ammonia formed? (Hint: atomic mass H = 1 u, N = 14 u.)

Balance N first (put a number in front of NH₃), then H. For (c) think of Lavoisier: mass is neither created nor destroyed.

🎬 Step by step – balance, count, then weigh
(a) N₂ + 3H₂ → 2NH₃
(b)
AtomReactantsProducts
N2 (in N₂)2 (in 2NH₃)
H6 (in 3H₂)6 (in 2NH₃)
N: 2 = 2; H: 6 = 6. The equation is balanced.
(c) By the law of conservation of mass, the total mass of the products equals the total mass of the reactants: 28 g + 6 g = 34 g of ammonia. Check with atomic masses: N₂ = 2 × 14 = 28 u; 3H₂ = 3 × 2 = 6 u; 2NH₃ = 2 × (14 + 3) = 2 × 17 = 34 u. So 28 g of N₂ needs exactly 6 g of H₂, and gives 34 g of NH₃.

Question 2 · Carbon and nitric acid

2. C + 4HNO₃ → 2H₂O + CO₂ + 4NO₂

Find and write the oxidation numbers of carbon in this equation.
What happens to the oxidation number of carbon in this reaction?
Does carbon undergo oxidation or reduction?
Which is the oxidising agent in this reaction? Which is the reducing agent?
🎬 Step by step – oxidation numbers above every atom
(a) Before the reaction carbon is in the elemental state: {0|C}, oxidation number 0. After: in CO₂, x + 2(−2) = 0, so x = +4: {+4|C}{−2|O}₂.
(b) The oxidation number of carbon increases from 0 to +4 (by 4).
(c) An increase in oxidation number is oxidation. Carbon is oxidised.
(d) Nitrogen: in HNO₃, (+1) + x + 3(−2) = 0, x = +5; in NO₂, x + 2(−2) = 0, x = +4. Nitrogen goes +5 → +4, a decrease, so it is reduced. H (+1) and O (−2) do not change.
Oxidising agent: HNO₃ (nitric acid; it is reduced). Reducing agent: C (carbon; it is oxidised).
{0|C} + 4{+1|H}{+5|N}{−2|O}₃ → 2{+1|H}₂{−2|O} + {+4|C}{−2|O}₂ + 4{+4|N}{−2|O}₂

Question 3 · The oxidation number of sulphur

(സൂചന: ഹൈഡ്രജന്റെ ഓക്സിഡേഷൻ നമ്പർ +1, ഓക്സിജന്റെ ഓക്സിഡേഷൻ നമ്പർ −2) Find the oxidation number of sulphur in the compounds below (hint: oxidation number of hydrogen +1, of oxygen −2).

a) SO₂   b) SO₃   c) H₂SO₃   d) H₂SO₄

✍️ Write the oxidation number of S, then check
a) SO₂: S =   b) SO₃: S =
c) H₂SO₃: S =   d) H₂SO₄: S =

Type the sign too: +4, −2.

🧮 Oxidation-number calculator – pick a compound
CompoundSum of oxidation numbers = 0S
a) SO₂x + 2(−2) = 0 → x − 4 = 0+4
b) SO₃x + 3(−2) = 0 → x − 6 = 0+6
c) H₂SO₃2(+1) + x + 3(−2) = 0 → 2 + x − 6 = 0+4
d) H₂SO₄2(+1) + x + 4(−2) = 0 → 2 + x − 8 = 0+6
Remember to multiply by the number of atoms: 4 oxygen atoms give 4 × (−2) = −8.

Question 4 · True or false?

Some statements are given. Write whether each is true or false.

👆 Tap True or False for each statement
Oxidation is the process in which the oxidation number increases.
Oxidation is the process in which the oxidation number decreases.
In a chemical reaction the oxidising agent is reduced.
In a chemical reaction the oxidising agent is oxidised.

a) True. b) False: a decrease in oxidation number is reduction. c) True. d) False: the oxidising agent is reduced (the reducing agent is the one that is oxidised).
Memory aid: “Loss = Oxidation, Gain = Reduction” of electrons; the oxidation number goes up in oxidation and down in reduction; the oxidising agent takes electrons (so it is reduced), and the reducing agent gives electrons (so it is oxidised).

Question 5 · Balance four equations

Balance the chemical equations below.

a) SO₂ + O₂ → SO₃    b) H₂O₂ → H₂O + O₂
c) CH₄ + O₂ → H₂O + CO₂    d) Fe + HCl → FeCl₂ + H₂

⚖️ Equation balancer – change only the coefficients

Press + or − under each formula. Each tally box turns green when that atom has the same count on both sides. The subscripts are locked: they belong to the formula of the substance.

a) 2SO₂ + O₂ → 2SO₃   (S 2 = 2; O 4 + 2 = 6 = 2 × 3)
b) 2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂   (H 4 = 4; O 4 = 2 + 2)
c) CH₄ + 2O₂ → 2H₂O + CO₂   (C 1 = 1; H 4 = 4; O 4 = 2 + 2)
d) Fe + 2HCl → FeCl₂ + H₂   (Fe 1 = 1; H 2 = 2; Cl 2 = 2)
Method: balance the atom that appears in the fewest formulae first; leave O₂, H₂ and single elements for last; then recount every atom.

Question 6 · Redox or not? (I)

Two chemical equations are given. Find the oxidation numbers of the atoms and check whether these are redox reactions റിഡോക്സ് പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ.

a) CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂    b) Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂

🔍 Redox detective
a) {+2|Ca}{+4|C}{−2|O}₃ + 2{+1|H}{−1|Cl} → {+2|Ca}{−1|Cl}₂ + {+1|H}₂{−2|O} + {+4|C}{−2|O}₂
C in CaCO₃: (+2) + x + 3(−2) = 0 → x = +4. Ca +2 → +2, C +4 → +4, O −2 → −2, H +1 → +1, Cl −1 → −1. No oxidation number changes, so this is not a redox reaction.
b) {0|Zn} + 2{+1|H}{−1|Cl} → {+2|Zn}{−1|Cl}₂ + {0|H}₂
Zn 0 → +2 (increase: oxidised); H +1 → 0 (decrease: reduced); Cl −1 → −1. Oxidation and reduction take place together, so this is a redox reaction. Oxidising agent HCl, reducing agent Zn.

Question 7 · Carbon monoxide burns

Carbon monoxide (CO), a fuel, burns in oxygen to form carbon dioxide.

Write the balanced equation for this reaction.
Is this a redox reaction? Why?
Which is the oxidising agent? Which is the reducing agent?
🎬 Step by step – balance first, then the oxidation numbers
(a) 2CO + O₂ → 2CO₂ (C 2 = 2; O 2 + 2 = 4 = 2 × 2).
(b) Yes, it is a redox reaction. 2{+2|C}{−2|O} + {0|O}₂ → 2{+4|C}{−2|O}₂. C in CO: x + (−2) = 0, x = +2; in CO₂: +4. Carbon's oxidation number increases (+2 → +4): oxidation. Oxygen of O₂ goes 0 → −2: reduction. Oxidation and reduction happen at the same time, so it is redox.
(c) Oxidising agent: O₂ (it is reduced). Reducing agent: CO (its carbon is oxidised).

Question 8 · Calcium and hydrochloric acid

Evaluate the chemical equation below: Ca + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂

Write the oxidation numbers of the atoms before and after the reaction.
Which atom is oxidised?
Which atom is reduced?
Which are the oxidising agent and the reducing agent?
✍️ (a) Fill in the oxidation numbers, then (b)–(d) (type +2, −1, 0; names or symbols for b–d)
🔍 Watch the oxidation numbers change
{0|Ca} + 2{+1|H}{−1|Cl} → {+2|Ca}{−1|Cl}₂ + {0|H}₂
AtomBeforeAfterChange
Ca0+2increase → oxidation
H+10decrease → reduction
Cl−1−1no change
(b) Atom oxidised: Ca (calcium). (c) Atom reduced: H (the hydrogen of HCl). (d) Oxidising agent: HCl; reducing agent: Ca.

Question 9 · Redox or not? (II)

Evaluate the chemical equations below and find out whether they are redox reactions. Justify your answer.

a) NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H₂O    b) H₂S + Cl₂ → 2HCl + S

🔍 Redox detective
a) {+1|Na}{−2|O}{+1|H} + {+1|H}{−1|Cl} → {+1|Na}{−1|Cl} + {+1|H}₂{−2|O}
Na +1, O −2, H +1 and Cl −1 are the same on both sides. No oxidation number changes: not a redox reaction. (It is a neutralisation: an acid and a base give a salt and water.)
b) {+1|H}₂{−2|S} + {0|Cl}₂ → 2{+1|H}{−1|Cl} + {0|S}
S −2 → 0 (increase: oxidation); Cl 0 → −1 (decrease: reduction); H stays +1. Both happen together: a redox reaction. Oxidising agent Cl₂; reducing agent H₂S.

Question 10 · Concept map for Fe + S → FeS

(സൂചന: സംയോജകത S = 2, Fe = 2) A chemical equation is given in a concept map. Find the oxidation number of each atom and, on that basis, fill in the missing parts of the concept map (hint: valency സംയോജകത S = 2, Fe = 2).

Fe and S on the left are elements: oxidation number 0. In FeS, iron is the metal: with valency 2 it gives 2 electrons, so Fe is +2 and S is −2 (sum +2 − 2 = 0). Then: who went up? who went down?

🗺️ Fill the 10 bubbles Tap a value, then tap a bubble (or drag the value onto a bubble). A value can be used many times. O.N. = oxidation number.

Extended activities

🛑 Read this first – teacher demonstrations only

Activities 1–3 use heat, toxic or flammable chemicals and give off fumes or flames. In this guide they are virtual demonstrations: watch them here, and in school only watch your teacher do them in the laboratory. Never try them at home. This page gives no more procedure than the textbook does.

Extended activity 1 · Iron and sulphur

A mixture of iron (Fe) filings and sulphur (S) in the mass ratio 7 : 4 is heated strongly in a china dish. After the dish cools, check whether the iron can be separated with a magnet. Does the substance obtained dissolve in carbon disulphide? What is the conclusion? Write the chemical equation of the reaction and check whether it is a redox reaction.

🧲 Virtual teacher demonstration – iron + sulphur
Press the buttons in order to watch the demonstration.
⚠ Teacher only, in a fume cupboard, with safety goggles. Heating iron and sulphur gives off choking, poisonous sulphur fumes and the mixture glows red hot. Carbon disulphide is toxic and catches fire extremely easily, even from a hot surface: it is never used near a flame. Never at home.
Observations: before heating, the magnet pulls the iron out of the mixture. After heating and cooling, the magnet cannot separate the iron, and the substance does not dissolve in carbon disulphide (sulphur would).
Conclusion: the properties of iron and of sulphur have disappeared, so a new compound has formed: iron sulphide. A chemical change has taken place.
Equation: valencies Fe 2, S 2 → Fe₂S₂ → FeS. Fe + S → FeS (balanced: Fe 1 = 1, S 1 = 1). The ratio 7 : 4 is the mass ratio 56 : 32 of one Fe atom (56 u) to one S atom (32 u), so all the iron and all the sulphur react.
Redox? {0|Fe} + {0|S} → {+2|Fe}{−2|S}. Fe 0 → +2 (oxidised), S 0 → −2 (reduced). Yes, it is a redox reaction; S is the oxidising agent and Fe the reducing agent (the same as the concept map in Q10).

Extended activity 2 · Ice that “burns”

Fill a container with sand, put calcium carbide (CaC₂) on it, spread sand again, and place a few ice cubes on top. Try to light the ice. What do you observe? Calcium carbide and water react to form acetylene (C₂H₂) gas, which burns. Write the equation for the combustion ജ്വലനം and check whether it is a redox reaction.

🔥 Virtual teacher demonstration – the burning ice
Press the buttons in order to watch the demonstration.
⚠ Teacher only, outdoors or in a fume cupboard, with goggles, far from anything that can catch fire. Acetylene is a highly flammable gas and calcium carbide reacts strongly with water. Calcium carbide is also used illegally to ripen fruit; never handle it at home.
Observation: the ice cubes seem to catch fire and burn with a bright, smoky flame. The ice itself does not burn: water from the melting ice reaches the calcium carbide and makes acetylene gas, and it is the acetylene that burns on the surface.
CaC₂ + 2H₂O → C₂H₂ + Ca(OH)₂ (gives the gas).
Combustion: C₂H₂ + O₂ → CO₂ + H₂O, balanced: 2C₂H₂ + 5O₂ → 4CO₂ + 2H₂O (C 4 = 4; H 4 = 4; O 10 = 8 + 2).
Redox? 2{−1|C}₂{+1|H}₂ + 5{0|O}₂ → 4{+4|C}{−2|O}₂ + 2{+1|H}₂{−2|O}. C in C₂H₂: 2x + 2(+1) = 0 → x = −1; in CO₂ +4. Carbon −1 → +4 (oxidised), oxygen 0 → −2 (reduced), H stays +1. Yes, the combustion is a redox reaction; O₂ is the oxidising agent, C₂H₂ the reducing agent.
Go further: in CaC₂ + 2H₂O → C₂H₂ + Ca(OH)₂ no oxidation number changes (C stays −1, Ca +2, H +1, O −2), so that first step is not redox.

Extended activity 3 · Aluminium and iodine

(അലൂമിനിയത്തിന്റെ സംയോജകത = 3, അയോഡിന്റെ സംയോജകത = 1) Aluminium powder and powdered iodine crystals are mixed in the mass ratio 1 : 2, put as a small heap in a china dish with a small hollow on top, and one or two drops of water are added in the hollow. What is observed? Aluminium and iodine combine to form aluminium tri-iodide (valency of aluminium 3, of iodine 1).

🎬 Write and balance the equation, then the oxidation numbers
⚠ Teacher only, inside a fume cupboard, with goggles. The reaction is violent, gets very hot and gives off thick violet iodine fumes that harm the eyes and lungs. Never at home.
Observation: after a short delay a vigorous reaction starts, with heat, sometimes a flash, and thick violet fumes (iodine vapour). The water only starts the reaction.
(a) Valencies Al 3, I 1 → AlI₃. Al + I₂ → AlI₃ → balance I: 3I₂ → 2AlI₃ (6 = 6) → balance Al: 2Al + 3I₂ → 2AlI₃ (Al 2 = 2, I 6 = 6).
(b) 2{0|Al} + 3{0|I}₂ → 2{+3|Al}{−1|I}₃. Al 0 → +3 (loses 3 electrons: oxidised); I 0 → −1 (gains an electron: reduced). Oxidation and reduction happen at the same time, so it is a redox reaction. Oxidising agent I₂, reducing agent Al.
