In-text Questions – Solutions

Every question asked inside the chapter, in the order of the book, with a model answer and the reason. Tables 7.1 to 7.6 are all here, filled in, and several of them are also fill-ins you can check. So are the carbon dioxide tick list and the A–B matching. Try each question in your science diary സയൻസ് ഡയറി first, then open the solution.

📖 Where each topic is explained
⚠️ Several experiments in this chapter are for the teacher only: hydrogen burns explosively (no flame near a hydrogen generator), heating KMnO₄, concentrated acids, and above all chlorine (poisonous – fume cupboard only). Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas: never burn charcoal in a closed room.

1 · Table 7.1 – metals, non-metals and metalloids (p 133)

Look at the periodic table, find a few examples of metals, non-metals and metalloids, and complete Table 7.1. Sort each element below, then press Check.

Any correct examples are accepted. This chapter studies five important non-metals: hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and chlorine.

2 · Hydrogen – Table 7.2 and its preparation (pp 134–135)

Complete the table and prepare a short note on hydrogen. Type your answers, then press Check.

Atomic number
Mass number മാസ് നമ്പർ1 (protium)
Number of electrons
Number of protons
Number of neutrons
Solubility in water ജലത്തിലെ ലേയത്വംdoes not dissolve (only very slightly)
Isotopes ഐസോടോപ്പുകൾprotium, deuterium, tritium
Note on hydrogen. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and the main component of the Sun and the stars; there is very little free hydrogen in air. It has one proton and one electron (the commonest isotope, protium, has no neutron). It was discovered by Henry Cavendish in 1766, who called it "inflammable air" കത്തുന്ന വായു. It is a colourless, odourless gas made of diatomic molecules (H₂), less dense than air, and it does not dissolve in water.

(Fig 7.1) Put a few granules of zinc in 5 mL of dilute HCl in a test tube and record your observation. Is the gas hydrogen? How can you confirm it? Bring a burning splinter (a bit of coconut-leaf stick, eerkkil) to the mouth of the test tube. What do you observe?

Bubbles of a colourless gas rise from the zinc (effervescence) and the zinc slowly gets smaller. When a burning splinter is brought to the mouth of the tube, the gas burns with a "pop" sound പോപ്പ് ശബ്ദം. This confirms that the gas is hydrogen.

Write the balanced chemical equation for this reaction.

Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl2 + H2↑Check: Zn 1 = 1; H 2 = 2; Cl 2 = 2. Industrially, hydrogen is made by the electrolysis of water

To which category do the reactions above belong: combination, displacement or decomposition?

2H2 + O2 → 2H2O + heat   ·   H2 + Cl2 (sunlight)→ 2HCl
Both are combination reactions സംയോജന രാസപ്രവർത്തനം: two substances combine to form a single new substance (water; hydrogen chloride).

3 · Hydrogen as a fuel (pp 136–137, Fig 7.2)

Look at the graph of calorific values കലോറിക മൂല്യം (Fig 7.2): hydrogen 143, methane 56, petrol (octane) 48, coal (carbon) 33, ethanol 30, methanol 23, carbohydrates 16, carbon monoxide 10 kJ/g.

Which fuel has the lowest calorific value?
Which fuel has the highest calorific value?
What is the product when hydrogen burns in air?
1. Carbon monoxide (10 kJ/g). 2. Hydrogen (143 kJ/g). 3. Water (2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O).
Calorific value: the heat energy released when unit mass of a fuel burns completely. Merits of hydrogen as a fuel: only water forms, so there is very little pollution; very high calorific value. Limitations: it burns explosively; it is difficult to store and transport. That is why it is not yet used as a household fuel.
Which hydrogen compounds do you know?
Which property of hydrogen is used in each case? a. Hydrogen-filled balloons rise in air. b. It is used as a fuel.
Prepare a note on the prospects of hydrogen as a fuel.
1. Water (H₂O), ammonia (NH₃), methane (CH₄), hydrogen chloride / hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄), methanol (CH₃OH), ethanol, glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆), sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
2. a. Hydrogen is less dense than air. b. It burns and has a high calorific value (143 kJ/g).
3. Note. Hydrogen has the highest calorific value of all common fuels, and burning it gives only water, so it does not add smoke or carbon dioxide to the air. If the problems of its explosive burning and of storing and transporting it safely are solved, hydrogen can become a universal fuel. It could then help solve the shortage of fossil fuels and the problem of pollution. Hydrogen buses and cars with fuel cells are already being tried (go further).

4 · Carbon, diamond and graphite (pp 137–140)

Find the position, atomic number and electron configuration of carbon from the periodic table and record them in your science diary.

Atomic number 6; electron configuration 2, 4; group 14, period 2. It has 4 outer electrons, so its valency is 4.
Allotropes രൂപാന്തരങ്ങൾ: different forms of the same element with different physical properties; the phenomenon is allotropy രൂപാന്തരത്വം. Crystalline: diamond, graphite, fullerene, graphene. Amorphous: charcoal, coke, lamp black, coal (Fig 7.3).

Diamond (Fig 7.4)

In diamond, each carbon atom forms covalent bonds with how many surrounding carbon atoms?
What is the valency of carbon?
Are there free electrons in diamond?
From its properties, find why diamond is used to make jewellery and to cut glass.
1. Four. 2. Four. 3. No: all four outer electrons of every carbon are used in bonds, so diamond does not conduct electricity.
4. Jewellery: its very high refractive index അപവർത്തനാങ്കം makes it sparkle. Cutting glass: it is the hardest natural substance (strong covalent bonds in all directions). It also has high thermal conductivity.

Graphite (Fig 7.5)

In graphite, each carbon atom forms covalent bonds with how many carbon atoms?
How many free electrons are there on each carbon atom in graphite?
Why does graphite conduct electricity?
1. Three. 2. One. 3. Each carbon uses only three of its four outer electrons in bonds; the fourth electron is free to move through the layers and carries the current. The layers are held together only by weak forces, so they slide over one another: graphite is a lubricant സ്നേഹകം.

Some uses of graphite are given. Write the property that makes each possible: a. as an electrode in a dry cell; b. to make pencil "lead"; c. as a lubricant.

a. It conducts electricity (free electrons). b. It is soft and leaves a dark mark on paper (layers rub off). c. Its layers slide over one another (only weak forces between layers).

Tabulate and compare the properties of graphite and diamond.

5 · Carbon compounds and carbon dioxide (pp 140–141, Fig 7.8)

Which carbon compounds do you know?
Which of them are compounds of carbon and oxygen only?
Which main compound forms when carbon or carbon compounds burn in air?
1. Carbon dioxide (CO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH₄), calcium carbonate (CaCO₃, marble/limestone), washing soda (Na₂CO₃·10H₂O), baking soda (NaHCO₃), glucose, ethanol, urea.
2. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) and carbon monoxide (CO). 3. Carbon dioxide.
Which reactants are used here (Fig 7.8)?
Complete the equation: CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + …
How can you identify that the gas formed is CO₂?
1. Calcium carbonate (marble chips) and dilute hydrochloric acid (added through the thistle funnel തിസിൽ ഫണൽ). CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2 3. Pass the gas through clear lime water ചുണ്ണാമ്പുവെള്ളം, Ca(OH)₂: it turns milky. CO₂ is denser than air, so it is collected in an upright jar.

6 · Table 7.3 – test for carbonates (p 142)

For each item in column A, find the matching item from column B.

Washing soda അലക്കുകാരം – Na₂CO₃·10H₂O · carbon monoxide + hydrogen – water gas · baking soda അപ്പക്കാരം – NaHCO₃. The extra item, producer gas, is carbon monoxide + nitrogen (CO + N₂).

8 · Nitrogen (pp 143–145)

Nitrogen in the atmosphere is inert under ordinary conditions. Give the reason.
Which gas supports combustion?
Which gas helps to control the rate of combustion?
  4. Complete: N₂ + O₂ → ……
1. The two nitrogen atoms in N₂ are joined by a very strong triple bond (N≡N), which is hard to break, so nitrogen is inert നിഷ്ക്രിയം. 2. Oxygen. 3. Nitrogen: it dilutes the oxygen in air (78 % of air), so things do not burn too fast. N2 + O2 → 2NO  ·  2NO + O2 → 2NO2  ·  4NO2 + 2H2O + O2 → 4HNO3 In lightning, the triple bond breaks and nitric oxide (NO) forms; NO₂ dissolves in rain water to give nitric acid, which reaches the soil and forms nitrates. Rhizobium bacteria in the root nodules of pulse plants also fix nitrogen (nitrogen fixation നൈട്രജൻ സ്ഥിരീകരണം).

What are the ways to supply plants with more of the elements they need? Using Table 7.4, write the merits and limitations of chemical fertilisers and organic manure.

Ways: using organic manure ജൈവവളം and using chemical fertilisers രാസവളം.
Organic manureChemical fertiliser
Meritseco-friendly; keeps the natural character of the soil; does no harm to soil microbes; less pollutionhigher yield; easily available; gives all three nutrients (N, P, K) quickly
Limitationsnutrients become available slowly; needed in larger amountschanges the biological structure of the soil; increases soil acidity; causes pollution
Farming should use fertilisers scientifically and wisely.

Organise a debate, through the science club, on the role of organic manure and chemical fertilisers in farming.

For organic manure: keeps soil healthy and full of microbes and earthworms; no acidity or pollution of wells, rivers and backwaters; cheap, made from farm waste (cow dung, compost, green leaves).
For chemical fertilisers: quick, measured supply of N, P and K; high yield to feed a large population; easy to store and transport (e.g. from FACT, Udyogamandal).
Conclusion: neither alone is ideal – a balanced, scientific use of both (soil testing, the right dose at the right time) gives good yield and keeps the soil healthy. Debate support is on page 7.

9 · Oxygen – Fig 7.9 and Table 7.5 (pp 145–146)

What is the reactant in this reaction?

Complete the equation: 2KMnO₄ → K₂MnO₄ + MnO₂ + ……
1. Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄). 2. The glowing matchstick bursts into flame (burns brightly): the gas supports combustion – it is oxygen. 2KMnO4 (heat)→ K2MnO4 + MnO2 + O2 Check: K 2 = 2; Mn 2 = 1 + 1; O 8 = 4 + 2 + 2.

Choose the correct physical properties of oxygen (Table 7.5), then press Check.

Complete: C + O₂ → ……  ·  2H₂ + O₂ → ……
Metals slowly lose their shine as they react with oxygen. Why?

C + O2 → CO2   ·   2H2 + O2 → 2H2O Oxygen in air reacts with the metal surface and forms a thin, dull layer of the metal oxide, which covers the shiny metal. (Industrially oxygen is made by electrolysis: 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂.)

10 · Oxygen balance and the ozone layer (p 147)

Prepare a note on the role of plants in keeping the amount of oxygen in the air steady, and present it in class.
Organise a seminar on ozone depletion and its remedies.
1. Plants and the oxygen balance. Living things use up oxygen in respiration, and burning fuels uses more. Green plants (and algae in the sea) make food by photosynthesis: they take in carbon dioxide and water and, in sunlight, give out oxygen. This returns oxygen to the air as fast as it is used, so its amount stays steady at about 21 %. Cutting forests and filling paddy fields and wetlands upsets this balance; planting trees and protecting mangroves and the Western Ghats forests helps keep it.
2. Seminar outline. (a) Ozone (O₃) in the stratosphere absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation അൾട്രാവയലറ്റ് വികിരണങ്ങൾ: 3O₂ ⇌ 2O₃ (UV). (b) Depletion: CFCs ക്ലോറോഫ്ലൂറോകാർബണുകൾ from old refrigerators, ACs and sprays rise to the stratosphere, break up and release chlorine, which destroys ozone. (c) Effects: more UV reaches the Earth – sunburn, skin cancer, eye cataracts, harm to crops and sea life. (d) Remedies: stop CFCs (Montreal Protocol); use substitutes such as HFCs, liquid hydrocarbons, ammonia and solid CO₂; dispose of old fridges and ACs properly; spread awareness on International Ozone Day, 16 September. Seminar support is on page 8.

11 · Chlorine – Table 7.6 and its preparation (pp 148–149)

Use the periodic table to complete the table about chlorine. (Try it as a fill-in on page 9.)

Which products are formed?
Why is the chlorine passed through water and sulphuric acid before it is collected in the jar?
2KMnO4 + 16HCl → 2KCl + 2MnCl2 + 8H2O + 5Cl2 1. Potassium permanganate and concentrated hydrochloric acid (teacher only, in a fume cupboard).
2. Potassium chloride, manganese chloride, water and chlorine.
3. Water dissolves and removes the hydrogen chloride vapour that comes out with the chlorine. Concentrated sulphuric acid absorbs the water vapour, so the chlorine is dried. Chlorine is denser than air, so it is collected by upward displacement of air.

12 · Bleaching and the chloride test (pp 149–150)

A dry coloured cloth is put in one jar of chlorine and a moist one in another. What happens to the colour of each?

The dry cloth keeps its colour; the moist cloth is bleached. H2O + Cl2 → HCl + HOCl   ·   HOCl → HCl + [O] Chlorine reacts with water to give hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid ഹൈപ്പോക്ലോറസ് ആസിഡ്. HOCl is unstable and gives nascent oxygen നവജാത ഓക്സിജൻ, a powerful oxidising agent that turns coloured substances colourless. Without water, no HOCl forms, so dry chlorine cannot bleach.
Bleaching powder: 2Ca(OH)2 + 2Cl2 → Ca(OCl)2 + CaCl2 + 2H2O
Add two or three drops of silver nitrate solution to 2 mL of sodium chloride solution. What do you observe?
Add ammonium hydroxide solution to the thick white precipitate (silver chloride). What happens to the precipitate?
1. A curdy white precipitate of silver chloride forms. NaCl + AgNO3 → AgCl↓ + NaNO3 2. The precipitate dissolves in ammonium hydroxide. This is how chloride salts are identified. Other chlorides (KCl, CaCl₂ …) give the same result; try them in the virtual test tube on page 9.

13 · Find the right word (p 150)

Box: nitrogen, nitric oxide, oxygen, carbon, carbon dioxide.
