Let Us Assess & Extended Activities – Solutions

All fourteen end-of-chapter questions with model answers. Every structure the questions ask for is drawn here by a structure drawer that counts the bonds: it refuses to draw any carbon that does not have exactly four bonds, and it checks the molecular formula it drew. Fill in the three homologous series of Q4, sort formulas into alkanes, alkenes and alkynes in Q3 and Q5, and add hydrogens to a bare carbon chain step by step in Q8. Try each question yourself first, then open the answer. After that come the five extended activities തുടർപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ, including a turnable ball-and-stick model ബോൾ & സ്റ്റിക്ക് മാതൃക builder.

📖 What you need (pages 3–9 of this guide)

In the drawings double and triple bonds are red. Tap 🔍 Count the bonds under any set of structures: a small green 4 appears beside every carbon. Parts marked go further are beyond the textbook. At this level names without position numbers (butene, pentene) are accepted.

Extended activity 1 · Ball-and-stick models of butane, butene and butyne

Make and display ball-and-stick models of the alkane, alkene and alkyne with 4 carbon atoms.

🧱 Model builder – pick a molecule and turn it

The real angles are used: about 109.5° around a carbon with four single bonds, 120° around a C=C carbon, and a straight line along C≡C. In butyne, four atoms H–C≡C–C lie on one straight line.

You need: 12 dark balls (carbon) and 24 small white balls (hydrogen) – clay or play-dough, thermocol balls, or beads; toothpicks or broom sticks cut short; a little glue. Make the carbon balls bigger than the hydrogen balls.
  1. Butane C4H10: join 4 carbon balls in a zigzag with single sticks. Stick 3 H on each end carbon and 2 H on each middle carbon (10 H). Space the four sticks of each carbon evenly in 3-D, like a tripod with one leg straight up.
  2. Butene C4H8: join carbon 1 and carbon 2 with two sticks bent slightly (or a pair of flexible pipe-cleaners) – the double bond. Then add 2 H on C1, 1 H on C2, 2 H on C3 and 3 H on C4 (8 H). The C=C part is flat.
  3. Butyne C4H6: join carbon 1 and carbon 2 with three flexible sticks – the triple bond. Add 1 H on C1, no H on C2, 2 H on C3 and 3 H on C4 (6 H). Keep H–C≡C–C in a straight line.
  4. Check every carbon: count the sticks – it must be 4 (a double bond counts 2, a triple bond 3). Label each model with its name, molecular formula and family.
✔ 4 sticks on every C✔ 10, 8 and 6 H✔ names and formulae labelled✔ alkane · alkene · alkyne

Slide 8Conclusion & questions“Every unit of energy we save is CO2 we do not add.” Invite questions from the audience.

Tips: one idea per slide; big pictures, few words; practise with a timer; each speaker takes two slides; end with a hopeful message – the problem has solutions.

Extended activity 3 · Essay: the importance of organic chemistry

3. 'കാർബണിക രസതന്ത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം' എന്ന വിഷയത്തെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി ഒരു പ്രബന്ധം തയ്യാറാക്കി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുക. Prepare and present an essay on “The importance of organic chemistry” കാർബണിക രസതന്ത്രം.

The importance of organic chemistry – outline
Introduction. Organic chemistry is the chemistry of carbon compounds (except CO, CO2, carbonates and bicarbonates). Berzelius thought they could be made only by living things (vital force ജീവശക്തി), but in 1828 Wöhler made urea in the laboratory. Today we know millions of carbon compounds – many times more than the compounds of all other elements together – because of catenation കാറ്റിനേഷൻ and carbon's valency of four.
1. Life itself. Carbohydrates (rice, wheat, sugar from sugarcane), proteins, fats, vitamins and DNA are all organic compounds.
2. Food and agriculture. Food preservatives, flavours, pesticides and some fertilisers.
3. Medicines. Painkillers, antibiotics and vaccines are made and tested by organic chemists.
4. Fuels. LPG (butane), petrol, diesel, kerosene, CNG (methane) – all hydrocarbons from petroleum, coal and natural gas.
5. Materials. Plastics (polythene from ethene), synthetic fibres (nylon, polyester), rubber, paints, dyes, soaps and detergents, cosmetics (vaseline).
6. Responsibility. Burning fossil fuels causes global warming; plastics pollute. Chemists are making biodegradable plastics and cleaner fuels.
Conclusion. From the food we eat to the clothes we wear and the medicines that save us, organic chemistry is everywhere; using it wisely is our duty.

Write their molecular formulae.
Are they homologues? Justify your answer.
🔎 Both molecules fully drawn (oxygen in red: 2 bonds)
a) i) C 2, H 3 + 2 + 1 = 6, O 1 → C2H6O (also written C2H5OH). ii) C 3, H 3 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 8, O 1 → C3H8O (C3H7OH).
b) Yes, they are homologues. C3H8O − C2H6O = CH2: they differ by one –CH2– group, and both have the same –OH group, so they have similar chemical properties and fit one general formula. go further They are alcohols, CnH2n+1OH: ethanol and propanol.

Extended activity 5 · Models of six-carbon rings

Make and display models of ring compounds with 6 carbon atoms.

💍 Ring model builder – pick a ring and turn it
  1. Benzene ബെൻസീൻ C6H6 (aromatic): make a flat hexagon of 6 carbon balls; join them with single and double sticks alternately (Kekulé structure); add one H to each carbon, pointing outwards in the same plane.
  2. Cyclohexane C6H12 (alicyclic, saturated): join 6 carbon balls with single sticks in a ring; add two H on every carbon, one above and one below. go further A real cyclohexane ring is not flat; it bends into a “chair” shape, as the model above shows.
  3. Cyclohexene C6H10: like cyclohexane but with one double bond; the two C=C carbons get one H each, the other four get two each.
  4. Count 4 sticks on every carbon, and label each model with its name, formula and type (aromatic / alicyclic).
🔑 The ideas that answered everything on this page

Carbon always has 4 bonds. Alkanes CnH2n+2 (-ane), alkenes CnH2n (-ene), alkynes CnH2n−2 (-yne); word roots meth, eth, prop, but, pent, hex. Homologues differ by –CH2–. A ring takes two H away, like a double bond: cycloalkane CnH2n. Benzene C6H6, naphthalene C10H8. Petroleum is separated by fractional distillation; LPG is mainly butane. CO2, CH4, N2O and CFCs cause global warming; N2 does not.
