Petroleum, Coal, Natural Gas & Global Warming
The petrol in a scooter, the LPG cylinder in the kitchen, the kerosene lamp, the tar on the road and the candle on the table all come from one black, sticky liquid pumped up from deep under the ground. On this page you drill an oil well, heat crude oil in a virtual fractionating tower and watch it split into fractions, compare the kinds of coal, squeeze natural gas into CNG and LNG, and then play with the greenhouse effect to see why burning all these fuels is warming our planet – and what we can do about it.
1. Petroleum – crude oil
Crude oil, or petroleum, is mined from under the ground. It is a fossil fuel ഫോസിൽ ഇന്ധനം that is a mixture of many hydrocarbons. It is found very deep inside the Earth, trapped between hard rocks (Fig 8.11).
Petroleum is formed when the remains of living things undergo chemical changes over many thousands of years. Because it took so long to form, a well that is pumped dry will not fill again in our lifetime – fossil fuels are non-renewable.
Gas is the lightest, so it collects at the top of the trap; oil floats on the denser water below it. That is why natural gas is often found together with petroleum.
The tiny plants and animals of ancient seas (plankton) sank into the mud, were buried under more and more layers, and were slowly "cooked" by the heat and pressure deep underground. Most of the oil we use today began forming many millions of years ago. We burn in one year what nature took a very, very long time to make.
2. Fractional distillation അംശികസ്വേദനം (Fig 8.12)
The different components of petroleum are separated by fractional distillation. The crude oil is heated and its vapour enters a tall fractionating tower ഫ്രാക്ഷണേറ്റിങ് ടവർ. The tower is hottest at the bottom (about 350 °C) and gets cooler upwards (about 50 °C at the top). Each group of hydrocarbons – a fraction ഘടകം – condenses back to a liquid at the level where the temperature has fallen below its boiling range, and is drawn off there. Kerala's own refinery at Kochi (BPCL) does exactly this every day.
Each little chain of dots is one molecule; longer chains = more carbon atoms. The labels follow Fig 8.12 (which shows diesel as C₁₄–C₂₀; Table 8.9 gives C₁₆–C₂₀ – the ranges of neighbouring fractions overlap a little).
Small molecules (few carbon atoms) are held to each other only weakly, so they have low boiling points: they stay as vapour even in the cool top of the tower. Big molecules (many carbon atoms) have high boiling points: they condense low down, where it is still very hot. The very biggest (bitumen) never even boil – they run out of the bottom as a thick black residue.

3. LPG – the gas in your kitchen cylinder
The gases obtained during fractional distillation can be compressed under suitable conditions and used for many purposes. The main component of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), used for cooking, is butane, C₄H₁₀, which belongs to the alkanes.
Q. Butane has 4 carbon atoms. Check that it fits the alkane general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₂.
At room temperature butane is a gas, but under a little pressure it becomes a liquid. A 14.2 kg kitchen cylinder holds a lot of fuel as liquid; when you open the regulator, the liquid boils and comes out as gas. The gas itself has no smell – a strong-smelling compound is added on purpose so that a leak can be noticed at once.
4. Coal
Like petroleum, coal is another fossil fuel obtained from under the ground. It is formed by the carbonisation കാർബണൈസേഷൻ of plant remains that were buried in the soil long ago.
Carbonisation is the process in which plant remains change into carbon at high temperature and pressure in the absence of air.
Plants are made of carbon compounds, so coal is mainly carbon. But the amount of carbon differs in different kinds of coal: anthracite ആന്ത്രസൈറ്റ് 94 % C, bituminous coal ബിറ്റുമിനസ് കോൾ 83 % C, lignite ലിഗ്നൈറ്റ് 67 % C and peat പീറ്റ് 57 % C.
The four kinds and their carbon percentages are from the textbook (page 168). The order in which they form, peat → lignite → bituminous → anthracite, is a "go further" fact from geology.
Q (page 168). Which form of coal contains the most carbon?
Q (page 168). Which form of coal has the least carbon?
Uses of coal
As a domestic and industrial fuel ഗാർഹിക, വ്യാവസായിക ഇന്ധനമായി – in power stations, brick kilns and factories.
Used to make coke, coal tar and coal gas
A source of benzene, naphthalene, phenol and other aromatic compounds
Used to make synthetic petrol
Used to make some fertilisers, medicines and perfumes
Burning coal or charcoal in a closed room can produce carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas with no colour or smell. Never use a coal or charcoal stove (or an angeethi) in a closed room.
5. Natural gas – CNG and LNG
Natural gas is a fossil fuel. It is often found together with petroleum (you drilled it in Fig 8.11). Its main gas is methane, CH₄.
ജി – compressed natural gas: its main component is methane at high pressure. Many cities use it as a less-polluting fuel for vehicles – look for the green "CNG" autorickshaws and buses in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
- LNG എൽ. ജി – liquefied natural gas: made by liquefying methane gas at very high pressure.
It gives out less carbon than other fuels, so it is an eco-friendly fuel.
Under the GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited) project, LNG is now supplied in Kerala too, for industrial and household needs – through the pipeline from the LNG terminal at Puthuvype, Kochi.
In practice natural gas is also cooled very strongly (to about −162 °C) to turn it into LNG; the liquid takes up about 600 times less space than the gas, so it can be carried across the sea in special ships and stored in insulated tanks.
Q. Which statement is correct?
6. Global warming
You have now met many carbon compounds. Carbon dioxide is the main gas formed when carbon and its compounds burn. Because of human activities and natural causes, the amounts of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere are rising a lot. These gases are called greenhouse gases ഹരിതഗൃഹവാതകങ്ങൾ.
(Green house effect). Along with sunlight, ultraviolet and infrared rays ഇൻഫ്രാറെഡ് രശ്മികൾ reach the Earth. Infrared rays are heat radiation. The warm Earth sends infrared rays back towards space; the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap a part of them. This raises the temperature of the Earth and the atmosphere. This is the greenhouse effect ഹരിതഗൃഹപ്രഭാവം.
The rise in the average temperature of the Earth and its atmosphere is called global warming.
A simple model: a few rays and molecules stand for countless billions. Sunlight passes through the gases easily; it is the infrared going out that the gases catch.
Without any greenhouse gases, the Earth's average surface temperature would be far below freezing (about −18 °C) instead of about 15 °C – the natural greenhouse effect keeps our planet liveable. The problem is the extra greenhouse gas we add by burning coal, petrol and diesel and by cutting forests: it traps more heat, and the Earth keeps warming. Ozone and water vapour also act as greenhouse gases.
Table 8.10 and Fig 8.13 – who causes how much warming?
| Greenhouse gas ഹരിതഗൃഹ വാതകങ്ങൾ | Share in global warming ആഗോള താപനത്തിലുള്ള പങ്ക് | Annual rate of increase വാർഷികവർധന നിരക്ക് |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
| Nitrous oxide (N₂O)
| Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
Ozone and water vapour also cause global warming.
The CFC slice is drawn at about 20 % because the book gives a range (10–24 %); "others" is the small dark slice, as in Fig 8.13.
Q. Using Table 8.10: which gas has the largest share in global warming, and which is increasing fastest every year?
7. Panel discussion – effects of global warming and what we can do
What are the effects of global warming? What are the ways to fight global warming effectively? Organise a panel discussion on this topic. Use the two cards below as your notes.
🌡️ Effects
- Ice melts – glaciers and polar ice shrink.
- Sea level rises – low coasts and backwater areas such as Kuttanad are at risk of flooding and salt water.
- Extreme weather – very heavy rain in a short time, floods and landslides; long dry spells and droughts in other seasons.
- Crop loss – heat and changing monsoons harm rice, pepper, cardamom and tea.
- Health – heat stroke, and more mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue.
- Sea life – warmer seas bleach coral reefs and move fish away from our coast.
🌱 Remedies
- Burn less fossil fuel – coal, petrol, diesel.
- Renewable energy – solar and wind power. Kochi airport (CIAL) runs fully on solar power!
- Cleaner transport – walk, cycle, use buses and trains, CNG and electric vehicles.
- Save energy – switch off lights and fans, use LED bulbs and efficient appliances.
- Plant trees and protect forests, mangroves and wetlands – they take in CO₂.
- CFC-free refrigerators and ACs; dispose of old ones properly.
- Reduce waste – do not burn plastic or garbage; compost food waste.
Kerala has seen extremely heavy rain events, such as the great floods of 2018, and scientists expect such events to become more common as the Earth warms. The good news: the solutions are already here. Kerala has rooftop solar on homes and schools, CNG and electric buses and autos, the LNG pipeline, and thousands of students planting and caring for trees. Every tonne of CO₂ we avoid makes a difference.
8. Safety with fuels
- Petrol, kerosene, diesel and LPG are highly flammable. Never play with them, never store them near a flame or a stove, and keep them away from children.
- If you smell LPG: do not light a match or switch any light or fan on or off; turn off the regulator, open all doors and windows, go outside and tell an adult to call the gas agency.
- Kerosene lamps and candles (paraffin wax) must stay away from curtains, books and clothes.
- Never burn coal or charcoal in a closed room – carbon monoxide is poisonous.
- Petrol fumes are harmful to breathe; switch off the engine while refuelling.
- "The tower is hottest at the top" ✗ – it is hottest at the bottom (about 350 °C) and coolest at the top (about 50 °C).
- "LPG is mainly methane" ✗ – LPG is mainly butane, C₄H₁₀; natural gas (CNG, LNG) is mainly methane.
- "Peat has the most carbon" ✗ – anthracite (94 %) has the most; peat (57 %) the least.
- "Nitrogen is a greenhouse gas" ✗ – the greenhouse gases are CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, CFCs (and ozone, water vapour).
- "The greenhouse effect is always bad" ✗ – it keeps the Earth warm; the extra greenhouse gases cause global warming.
