In-text Questions – Solutions

Every question asked inside the chapter, in the order of the book, with a model answer and the reason. Tables 8.1 to 8.10 are all here, completed – the ones you have to fill in are also interactive, so you can type your answers and check them. Every structural formula on this page is drawn by the page itself, and the page checks that each carbon atom has exactly four bonds (hover over a structure to see its formula). Try each question in your science diary സയൻസ് ഡയറി first, then open the solution.

📖 Where each topic is explained
✏️ How to draw a structure that never loses marks

Draw the carbon chain first with its single, double or triple bonds. Then count the bonds on each carbon and add H atoms until every carbon has exactly 4 bonds (a double bond counts as 2, a triple bond as 3). Every H has only 1 bond. Finally count the C and H atoms to get the molecular formula.

1 · Organic compounds and Table 8.1 (pp 153–154)

With the help of the periodic table, complete Table 8.1 about the carbon atom. Type your answers, then press Check.

Symbol പ്രതീകംC
Atomic number
Electron configuration
Valency
Carbon has 4 electrons in its outermost shell, so its valency is 4. It completes its octet by sharing these electrons – it forms four covalent bonds, in many different ways. Organic compounds ഓർഗാനിക് സംയുക്തങ്ങൾ are the compounds of carbon other than CO, CO₂, carbonates and bicarbonates; their study is organic chemistry കാർബണിക രസതന്ത്രം.

2 · Hydrocarbons – Fig 8.1 and Fig 8.2 (pp 154–155)

Fig 8.1
Which atoms make up this compound (Fig 8.1)?
What is special about the bond between carbon and hydrogen?
Do you know other compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen?
1. Carbon (C) and hydrogen (H) – one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms (methane, CH₄).
2. Each C–H bond is a single covalent bond: carbon and hydrogen share one pair of electrons. Carbon forms four such bonds, one with each H atom.
3. Ethane C₂H₆, propane C₃H₈, butane C₄H₁₀ (in LPG), ethene C₂H₄, ethyne (acetylene) C₂H₂, benzene C₆H₆, naphthalene C₁₀H₈ (moth balls). Petrol, kerosene and paraffin wax are mixtures of such compounds.

Look at the carbon skeletons in Fig 8.2: (i) –C–C–, (ii) >C=C<, (iii) –C≡C–. Complete the valencies of carbon using hydrogen atoms.

What are the features of the bonds between the carbon atoms?

(i) single bond: 3 H on each C → C₂H₆ (ethane)
(ii) double bond: 2 H on each C → C₂H₄ (ethene)
(iii) triple bond: 1 H on each C → C₂H₂ (ethyne)
Carbon atoms can join each other by covalent bonds. Two carbon atoms may share one pair (single bond ഏകബന്ധനം), two pairs (double bond ദ്വിബന്ധനം) or three pairs (triple bond ത്രിബന്ധനം) of electrons. The more bonds used between the carbons, the fewer H atoms each carbon can hold.
Key idea: compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen are hydrocarbons

3 · Saturated hydrocarbons – methane, ethane and Table 8.2 (pp 155–157)

Study the structure of methane (Fig 8.3) and write its molecular formula. Which type of covalent bond does it have?

What is the molecular formula of the compound in Fig 8.4 (two carbon atoms, only single bonds)?

Methane: molecular formula CH₄; all four bonds are single covalent bonds.
Fig 8.4 (ethane): molecular formula C₂H₆; condensed formula CH₃–CH₃ കണ്ടൻസ്ഡ് ഫോർമുല. The structural formula shortened this way is called the condensed formula.

Complete Table 8.2 (alkanes). Type the missing condensed and molecular formulae, then press Check. You may type subscripts as ordinary digits (CH3–CH2–CH3). Draw the missing structures in your notebook and compare with the completed table.

You have seen that the number of carbon compounds is very large. List the reasons.

  • Catenation കാറ്റിനേഷൻ – the ability of atoms of the same element to join each other; carbon has it the most, so it forms long chains.
  • Valency 4 – each carbon can bond to four other atoms.
  • Carbon forms single, double and triple bonds.
  • Carbon chains can be straight, branched or closed into rings.
  • Carbon also bonds with other elements – hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, the halogens and more.
  • Go further: the same molecular formula can have different structures (isomerism), e.g. butene and cyclobutane are both C₄H₈.

11 · Fuels – Table 8.9 and coal (pp 167–168)

Table 8.9 lists the fractions obtained by the fractional distillation അംശികസ്വേദനം of petroleum and their uses. (Try it as a matching exercise and see the animated tower on page 9.)

The number of carbon atoms and the structure of the carbon chain are the main factors that decide the properties of fuels. The main component of LPG is butane, C₄H₁₀, an alkane.

Coal: anthracite (94 % C), bituminous coal (83 % C), lignite (67 % C), peat (57 % C).

Which form of coal contains the most carbon?
Which form of coal has the least carbon?
1. Anthracite ആന്ത്രസൈറ്റ് (94 % C). 2. Peat പീറ്റ് (57 % C). Coal is formed by carbonisation – plant remains changing into carbon at high temperature and pressure in the absence of air.

12 · Global warming – Table 8.10 and the panel discussion (pp 169–170)

Table 8.10 – greenhouse gases: share in global warming

Methane (CH₄)15%0.9%
Nitrous oxide (N₂O)6%0.3%
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)10 – 24%4%

* Ozone and water vapour also cause global warming.

What are the effects of global warming? What are the ways to fight it effectively? Organise a panel discussion on this topic.

Effects: melting of glaciers and polar ice; rise in sea level (low-lying coasts and Kuttanad at risk); extreme weather – very heavy rain, floods and landslides, but also droughts and heat waves; loss of crops; more heat stroke and mosquito-borne diseases; bleaching of coral reefs and harm to fish.
Remedies: burn less fossil fuel; use renewable energy (solar, wind); use public transport, CNG and electric vehicles; save electricity; plant trees and protect forests, mangroves and wetlands; use CFC-free refrigerators and ACs; do not burn plastic or waste.
Panel: a moderator, four panelists (causes · global effects · effects on Kerala · remedies) and questions from the audience. End on a hopeful note with an action pledge – the full plan, an interactive greenhouse model and the Fig 8.13 pie are on page 9.
