Chapter 6 · Let us assessTextbook pages 125–126

Let Us Assess, Q1–Q8 – Solutions

The first eight end-of-chapter questions: the quantity with the same unit as work, a pair of scalars, the unit of power in kg, m and s, a 50 N push, the pulley of Fig 6.13, the motor that fills a tank, an object pushed east and then south, and the kinetic-energy graph of a ball thrown straight up (Graph 6.1). Try each one in your science diary first, then step through the solution.

📖 What you need (pages 5–10 of this guide)

Question 1 · Same unit as work

Which of the following quantities uses the same unit as work?

a) power പവർb) energy ഊർജംc) force ബലംd) displacement സ്ഥാനാന്തരം

Write the SI unit of each option. Which one is measured in joules?

🎬 Solution animation – the unit of each option
(b) energy. Work is measured in joules (J). Energy is the capacity to do work, and when work is done energy is changed into work – so energy has the same unit, the joule. Power is in watts (J/s), force in newtons (N) and displacement in metres (m).

Question 2 · Which pair are both scalars?

In which of the pairs below are both quantities scalars അദിശ അളവുകൾ?

a) time and energy സമയവും ഊർജവുംb) force and power ബലവും പവറുംc) speed and acceleration വേഗവും ത്വരണവുംd) displacement and velocity സ്ഥാനാന്തരവും പ്രവേഗവും

A scalar has only size (magnitude). A vector also needs a direction. Ask of each quantity: “does it make sense to say which way?”

🎬 Solution animation – tag each quantity
(a) time and energy. Both have only magnitude – there is no direction to “30 seconds” or “500 joules”.
(b) force is a vector (it has a direction), power is a scalar; (c) speed is a scalar but acceleration is a vector; (d) displacement and velocity are both vectors.
⚠️ Common trap

Work is calculated from two vectors (force and displacement) but work itself is a scalar – it has no direction. That is why, in Q7 below, we can simply add the two amounts of work.

Question 3 · The unit of power in m, kg and s

If the unit of power is written using the base units metre, kilogram and second, which is correct?

a) kg m²/s³b) kg m/sc) kg m/s²d) kg m²/s

Start from P = W/t, then W = F × s, then F = m × a. Replace each unit step by step.

🎬 Solution animation – breaking the watt into base units
(a) kg m²/s³.
P = W/t, so unit of power = J/s. 1 J = 1 N × 1 m, and 1 N = 1 kg × 1 m/s² (F = ma).
So W = J/s = (N × m)/s = (kg m/s² × m)/s = kg m²/s³. (The other options: kg m/s is the unit of momentum, kg m/s² is the newton.)

Question 4 · 50 N moves 2.4 kg through 8 m

An object of mass 2.4 kg is on a level surface. When a force of 50 N is applied, it is displaced 8 m in the direction of the force. Find the work done.

a) 40 Jb) 400 Jc) 50 Jd) 17.6 J

Work = force × displacement in the direction of the force. Is the mass needed?

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Given → Formula → Substitution → Answer
Given: F = 50 N; s = 8 m in the direction of the force (m = 2.4 kg – not needed).
Formula: W = F × s.
Substitution: W = 50 N × 8 m.
Answer: W = 400 J – option (b).
⚠️ Common trap

Using the mass. The 2.4 kg is extra information – the force is already given. You would need mg only if the object were being lifted (work against gravity); here it slides along a level surface.

Question 5 · The pulley of Fig 6.13

The figure shows an object of mass 20 kg lifted through 5 m using a pulley കപ്പി. If 1020 J of work was done for this, answer the questions (acceleration due to gravity = 10 m/s²).

  1. If the friction of the pulley is not considered, what would be the work done?
  2. Calculate the work done against the friction of the pulley.

(a) Without friction, all the work goes into lifting: W = mgh. (b) The 1020 J actually done = work against gravity + work against friction.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – Fig 6.13 redrawn
🧪 Try other numbers – where does the work go?

In the question the friction loss is 20 J out of 1020 J – about 2 %. The friction part turns into heat in the pulley's axle.

Given: m = 20 kg; h = 5 m; g = 10 m/s²; work actually done = 1020 J.
Formula: (a) W = mgh; (b) work against friction = work actually done − mgh.
Substitution: (a) W = 20 kg × 10 m/s² × 5 m; (b) 1020 J − 1000 J.
Answer: (a) W = 1000 J; (b) work against friction = 20 J.
💡 Why this matters

No real machine is free of friction, so we always have to do a little more work than mgh. The extra 20 J is not destroyed – it becomes heat in the pulley. Oiling the axle makes this loss smaller.

Question 6 · The motor that fills the overhead tank

When an electric motor was run for 10 seconds, 186.5 kg of water reached a tank 8 m high (acceleration due to gravity = 10 m/s²).

  1. Calculate the power of this motor.
  2. What is the power of the motor in horsepower
  3. If the power of the motor is reduced to half, how long will it take to fill the same amount of water?

First find the work: W = mgh. Then P = W/t. For (b) divide by 746. For (c) the work is the same, so t = W ÷ (new power).

🎬 Solution in exam layout – pumping water up 8 m
🧪 Try it – a stronger or weaker motor
Given: m = 186.5 kg; h = 8 m; t = 10 s; g = 10 m/s²; 1 HP = 746 W.
Formula: W = mgh; P = W/t; t = W/P.
Substitution: W = 186.5 × 10 × 8 = 14 920 J; P = 14 920 J ÷ 10 s.
Answer: (a) P = 1492 W; (b) 1492 ÷ 746 = 2 HP; (c) half the power = 746 W, so t = 14 920 J ÷ 746 W = 20 s – twice as long.
⚠️ Common trap

In (c), halving the power does not change the work – the same water still has to be lifted 8 m. Only the time changes: half the power → double the time.

Question 7 · East, then south

The mass of an object is 4 kg. When a steady force of 3 N was applied towards the east, the object was displaced 6 m in that direction. Then the same force (3 N) was applied steadily towards the south, and it was displaced 5 m in that direction.

  1. Calculate the work done when the object was moved towards the south.
  2. Calculate the total work done on the object.

Find the work for each part separately with W = F × s. Work is a scalar, so the total is just the sum.

🎬 Solution in exam layout – the path seen from above
Given: F = 3 N east, s₁ = 6 m east; then F = 3 N south, s₂ = 5 m south (m = 4 kg – not needed).
Formula: W = F × s for each part; total work = W₁ + W₂ (work is a scalar).
Substitution: W₁ = 3 N × 6 m = 18 J; W₂ = 3 N × 5 m.
Answer: (a) work while moving south W₂ = 15 J; (b) total work = 18 J + 15 J = 33 J.
⚠️ Common trap

Using the straight-line displacement from start to finish (√(6² + 5²) ≈ 7.81 m): 3 × 7.81 ≈ 23.4 J is wrong. No single force acted along that line – the force changed direction. Find the work of each part along its own direction, then add.

Question 8 · Graph 6.1 – kinetic energy of a ball thrown up

When an object is thrown straight up, its potential energy and kinetic energy change. Which of the graphs below (kinetic energy ഗതികോർജം on the Y-axis, height ഉയരം on the X-axis) is correct for kinetic energy? Justify your answer.

Total energy = Ep + Ek stays the same (no air resistance). Ep = mgh grows steadily with h. So what must Ek do? And what is Ek at the very top?

🎬 Solution animation – Graph 6.1 (a)–(d) redrawn
🧪 Throw the ball – live kinetic energy against height

Sample ball: 0.2 kg, g = 9.8 m/s², no air resistance. Red dots: going up; blue rings: coming down – they land on the same straight line.

Graph 6.1 (a) – a straight line that slopes down and reaches zero at the greatest height.
Justification: while the ball rises, its kinetic energy changes into potential energy. With no air resistance the total energy is constant: Ek = (total energy) − mgh. Since mgh increases steadily (in proportion to h), Ek decreases steadily – a straight line going down. At the highest point the ball stops for a moment, so Ek = 0 there.
(b) shows KE increasing with height – wrong; (c) a curve that shoots up – wrong; (d) constant KE – that would mean the ball never slows down.
