Let Us Assess & Extended Activities – Solutions

All twelve end-of-chapter questions with model answers. Every dot diagram and orbit model the questions ask for is drawn step by step: you can watch the electrons move from the metal to the non-metal in ionic bonds, and watch the shared pairs appear in covalent bonds. Fill in the tables yourself first, then check. After the questions come the four extended activities തുടർപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ: magnesium nitride, the bonds in ethane, ethene and ethyne, a virtual conductivity experiment, and printable chart cards for your bulletin board.

📖 What you need (pages 3–10 of this guide)

How the diagrams are coloured: in an electron dot diagram ഇലക്ട്രോൺ ഡോട്ട് ഡയഗ്രം only the outermost electrons are drawn. The electrons of the two kinds of atom are drawn differently, so you can see where every electron came from: • blue dots for one atom, × red crosses for the other (in ionic compounds the crosses belong to the metal). In the orbit models the electrons that move are red. Ions are written in square brackets with the charge at the top right. Parts marked go further are beyond the textbook.

Question 1 · Dot diagrams of five atoms

Draw the electron dot diagrams of the atoms hydrogen (H), helium (He), lithium (Li), beryllium (Be) and fluorine (F).

Write the electron configuration first (Z = 1, 2, 3, 4, 9). Draw the symbol, then put only the outermost electrons around it as dots.

🎬 Step by step – from the orbit model to the dot diagram
AtomZConfigurationOutermost electronsDot diagram
Hydrogen111H• (1 dot)
Helium222He: (2 dots, a pair)
Lithium32, 11Li• (1 dot)
Beryllium42, 22•Be• (2 dots)
Fluorine92, 77F with 7 dots (3 pairs + 1 single dot)
The last step of the animation shows all five drawn the way you should draw them in the exam. Lithium has 3 electrons, but only the 1 in its outermost shell is drawn.

Questions 2 and 3 · The chlorine molecule, Cl₂

As in the fluorine (F₂) molecule, show with an electron dot diagram how the atoms form a chemical bond രാസബന്ധനം in the chlorine (Cl₂) molecule.

Show the covalent bond സഹസംയോജകബന്ധനം in the chlorine molecule using symbols.

🎬 Step by step – two chlorine atoms share one pair
Q2. Chlorine (Z = 17) is 2, 8, 7: 7 outermost electrons, one short of an octet. Neither chlorine atom can give away 7 electrons, and both need one more, so transfer is impossible. Instead each atom puts 1 electron into a shared pair. Draw each Cl with its 7 outer electrons (one as dots, the other as crosses) and place the shared pair between the two symbols, inside the overlap of the two circles. Count around each atom: 6 of its own + the shared 2 = 8, an octet for both.
Q3. One shared pair is a single bond, written with one line: Cl–Cl.

Question 4 · Ionic bonds in four compounds

Show the formation of the ionic bond in the ionic compounds അയോണിക സംയുക്തങ്ങൾ below with an electron dot diagram and an orbit model.

  1. Sodium fluoride സോഡിയം ഫ്ലൂറൈഡ് (NaF)
  2. Sodium oxide സോഡിയം ഓക്സൈഡ് (Na₂O)
  3. Magnesium fluoride മഗ്നീഷ്യം ഫ്ലൂറൈഡ് (MgF₂)
  4. Calcium oxide കാൽസ്യം ഓക്സൈഡ് (CaO)

For each compound: write both configurations, decide who gives and who takes, and count how many atoms of each you need so that every atom reaches an octet. Na₂O needs two sodium atoms for one oxygen; MgF₂ needs two fluorine atoms for one magnesium.

4 a) Sodium fluoride, NaF

🎬 NaF – orbit model, then dot diagram
Na (2, 8, 1) gives its 1 outermost electron to F (2, 7). Na → Na⁺ + 1e⁻ (2, 8); F + 1e⁻ → F⁻ (2, 8). Dot diagram: Na× + F (7 •) → [Na]⁺ [F (7 • + 1 ×)]⁻. The oppositely charged ions attract: ionic bond. Formula NaF.

4 b) Sodium oxide, Na₂O

🎬 Na₂O – two sodium atoms, one oxygen atom
O (2, 6) needs 2 electrons, but each Na (2, 8, 1) has only 1 to give, so two Na atoms are needed. 2Na → 2Na⁺ + 2e⁻; O + 2e⁻ → O²⁻ (2, 8). Dot diagram: Na× + O (6 •) + ×Na → [Na]⁺ [O (6 • + 2 ×)]²⁻ [Na]⁺. Charges: 2 × (+1) + (−2) = 0. Formula Na₂O.

4 c) Magnesium fluoride, MgF₂

🎬 MgF₂ – one magnesium atom, two fluorine atoms
Mg (2, 8, 2) must give away 2 electrons, but each F (2, 7) takes only 1, so two F atoms are needed. Mg → Mg²⁺ + 2e⁻ (2, 8); 2F + 2e⁻ → 2F⁻ (2, 8 each). Dot diagram: F (7 •) + ×Mg× + F (7 •) → [F]⁻ [Mg]²⁺ [F]⁻, each F⁻ with 7 dots and 1 cross. Charges: +2 + 2 × (−1) = 0. Formula MgF₂.

4 d) Calcium oxide, CaO

🎬 CaO – two electrons move together
Ca (2, 8, 8, 2) gives its 2 outermost electrons to O (2, 6). Ca → Ca²⁺ + 2e⁻ (2, 8, 8, the argon octet); O + 2e⁻ → O²⁻ (2, 8). Dot diagram: ××Ca + O (6 •) → [Ca]²⁺ [O (6 • + 2 ×)]²⁻. Formula CaO. (Check with electronegativity: 3.44 − 1.00 = 2.44, well above 1.7, so ionic.)
⚠️ How to draw it in the exam

Question 5 · Calcium and fluorine

Suppose calcium (Ca) and fluorine (F) combine.

Complete the table below accordingly.
Write the chemical formula രാസസൂത്രം of calcium fluoride.
In the same way, find and write the chemical formulae of magnesium chloride and aluminium chloride.
✍️ (a) Fill in the table, then check (write configurations like 2,8,1)
🎬 Step by step – valency, then cross over
ElementAtomic numberElectron configurationElectrons given or taken
Ca202, 8, 8, 2gives 2
F92, 7takes 1
(b) Valency of Ca = 2, of F = 1. Cross over: Ca₁F₂ → CaF₂. (One Ca atom gives its 2 electrons to two F atoms.)
(c) Magnesium (2, 8, 2) valency 2, chlorine (2, 8, 7) valency 1 → MgCl₂. Aluminium (Z = 13, 2, 8, 3) valency 3, chlorine 1 → AlCl₃.

Question 6 · Cations, anions and compounds

Some cations and anions are given in the table. Fill in the missing parts.

✍️ Fill in the blanks, then check (type charges like Mg2+ or CO3 2−, subscripts as plain numbers: MgCl2)
Mg²⁺Cl⁻MgCl₂
Na⁺F⁻NaF
NH₄⁺SO₄²⁻(NH₄)₂SO₄
K⁺CO₃²⁻K₂CO₃
How to find them: the total charge of a compound is zero. MgCl₂ has two Cl⁻ (total −2), so the cation is Mg²⁺. NaF: Na⁺ needs one −1 ion: F⁻. NH₄⁺ (charge 1) and SO₄²⁻ (charge 2): cross over → (NH₄)₂SO₄, with brackets because the radical റാഡിക്കൽ NH₄ is taken twice. K₂CO₃ has two K⁺ (total +2), so the anion is CO₃²⁻.

Question 7 · Completing the equations for MgCl₂

(സൂചന: അറ്റോമിക നമ്പർ Mg-12, Cl-17) Complete the chemical equations below and answer the questions (hint: atomic numbers Mg 12, Cl 17).

Which are the cation and the anion?
What is the nature of the chemical bond in MgCl₂?
✍️ Fill in the blanks, then check
Mg → Mg²⁺ +
Cl + 1e⁻ →
+ → MgCl₂

Type Mg2+ for Mg²⁺ and 2e- for 2e⁻.

🎬 MgCl₂ – the dot diagram behind the equations
Mg (2, 8, 2) → Mg²⁺ + 2e⁻ (2, 8)
Cl (2, 8, 7) + 1e⁻ → Cl⁻ (2, 8, 8)
Mg²⁺ + 2Cl⁻ → MgCl₂ (the 2 electrons from one Mg go to two Cl atoms)
(a) Cation: Mg²⁺; anion: Cl⁻.
(b) The electrons are transferred, and the oppositely charged ions are held by electrostatic attraction: an ionic bond (electrovalent bond ഇലക്ട്രോവാലന്റ് ബന്ധനം).

Question 8 · Shared electrons in F₂, Cl₂, O₂ and N₂

F – 9, Cl – 17, O – 8, N – 7) Complete the table below (hint: atomic numbers F 9, Cl 17, O 8, N 7).

✍️ Fill in the table, then check (number of shared electrons, and single / double / triple)
🎬 Count the shared pairs
Molecule തന്മാത്രConfiguration · needsShared electronsChemical bond
F₂2, 7 · 12 (1 pair)single bond, F–F
Cl₂2, 8, 7 · 12 (1 pair)single bond, Cl–Cl
O₂2, 6 · 24 (2 pairs)double bond, O=O
N₂2, 5 · 36 (3 pairs)triple bond, N≡N
The question asks for shared electrons, not pairs: O₂ shares 2 pairs = 4 electrons.

Question 9 · P, Q, R and S

Complete the table below (the symbols are not real).

Which of these elements has the greatest stability സ്ഥിരത?
Which element gives away electrons in chemical reactions?
Write the chemical formula of the compound formed when P and S combine.
✍️ Fill in the table, then check
🎬 Step by step – configurations first
ElementAtomic numberConfiguration
P122, 8, 2
Q92, 7
R102, 8
S172, 8, 7
(a) R: its outermost shell has 8 electrons (octet), like a noble gas.
(b) P: it has only 2 outermost electrons, so it gives them away (it is a metal).
(c) P gives 2 (valency 2), S takes 1 (valency 1). Cross over: P₁S₂ → PS₂.
(Really P = Mg, Q = F, R = Ne, S = Cl, so PS₂ is MgCl₂.)

Question 10 · Sodium and fluorine from their orbit models

The atom models of two elements are drawn (sodium സോഡിയം and fluorine ഫ്ലൂറിൻ).

Draw the electron dot diagram for the formation of sodium fluoride.
What is the nature of the chemical bond in sodium fluoride?
Write any two characteristics of compounds with this bond.
🎬 From the figure to the dot diagram
(a) From the figure, Na has 1 outermost electron and F has 7. Na× + F (7 •) → [Na]⁺ [F (7 • + 1 ×)]⁻, configurations (2, 8) and (2, 8).
(b) Ionic bond (electrovalent bond): an electron is transferred from Na to F, and the oppositely charged ions attract each other.
(c) Any two of these properties of ionic compounds: they are crystalline solids ക്രിസ്റ്റലുകൾ; they have very high melting and boiling points ഉരുകൽനില · തിളനില; they are generally soluble in polar solvents like water പോളാർ ലായകങ്ങൾ; they are non-volatile and hard ബാഷ്പീകരണസ്വഭാവം · കാഠിന്യം; they conduct electricity when molten or in solution (not as solids).

Question 11 · P, Q and R from their configurations

(പ്രതീകങ്ങൾ യഥാർഥമല്ല) The electron configurations of P, Q and R are given (the symbols are not real).

P – 2, 8, 6    Q – 2, 8, 1    R – 2, 8, 8

Which of these is the most stable? Why?
What is the atomic number of Q?
Draw the atom model of Q.
What are the valencies of P and Q?
Write the chemical formula of the compound formed when P and Q combine.
🎬 Step by step – stability, the atom model of Q, valency and formula
(a) R is the most stable, because its outermost shell has 8 electrons (octet), the noble-gas configuration. It does not need to give, take or share electrons.
(b) Q: 2 + 8 + 1 = 11.
(c) Atom model of Q: a nucleus marked 11p, with three circles carrying 2, 8 and 1 electrons (step 4 of the animation). The number of neutrons is not given, so write only 11p.
(d) P (2, 8, 6) takes 2 electrons → valency 2. Q (2, 8, 1) gives 1 electron → valency 1.
(e) Write Q first (it is the metal, less electronegative), cross over: Q₂P. (Really P = S, Q = Na, R = Ar: Q₂P is Na₂S, sodium sulphide.)

Question 12 · Ionic or covalent? The 1.7 rule

12. A, B, C, D A, B, C and D are four elements (the symbols are not real); details are in the table. Find the type of chemical bond in the compounds formed when these pairs combine: 1. C, B   2. C, D   3. A, B

ElementAtomic numberElectronegativity
A62.55
B83.44
C121.31
D173.16
🎬 Step by step – measure the difference against 1.7
PairDifference (larger − smaller)Compared with 1.7Bond
1. C, B3.44 − 1.31 = 2.13≥ 1.7ionic
2. C, D3.16 − 1.31 = 1.85≥ 1.7ionic
3. A, B3.44 − 2.55 = 0.89< 1.7covalent
(Really A = C, B = O, C = Mg, D = Cl: the compounds are MgO, MgCl₂ and CO₂.)

Extended activity 1 · Magnesium nitride

(സൂചന - സംയോജകത : നൈട്രജൻ - 3, മഗ്നീഷ്യം - 2) When nitrogen is passed over heated magnesium, magnesium nitride is formed. Write the chemical equation for this reaction. Using the electronegativity scale ഇലക്ട്രോനെഗറ്റിവിറ്റി സ്കെയിൽ of this unit, find whether the compound is ionic or covalent (hint: valency of nitrogen 3, magnesium 2).

🎬 Formula, equation and the electronegativity test
🎬 Three magnesium atoms, two nitrogen atoms go further
Formula: Mg (valency 2), N (valency 3). Cross over → Mg₃N₂.
Equation: 3Mg + N₂ → Mg₃N₂ (left: 3 Mg, 2 N; right: 3 Mg, 2 N, balanced).
Electronegativity (Fig 3.12): N 3.04, Mg 1.31. Difference = 3.04 − 1.31 = 1.73. This is ≥ 1.7, so magnesium nitride is ionic. It is only just above the line, a borderline case, but by the rule of the textbook it is ionic. It contains Mg²⁺ and N³⁻ (nitride) ions: 3 × (+2) + 2 × (−3) = 0.

Extended activity 2 · Ethane, ethene and ethyne

Show the chemical bonds in ethane (C₂H₆), ethene (C₂H₄) and ethyne (C₂H₂) with electron dot diagrams. Find whether these three compounds are ionic or covalent. Find the total number of bonds in each.

🔬 Pick a molecule, then count its bonds

Carbon (2, 4) has 4 outermost electrons and needs 4 more; each hydrogen has 1 and needs 1 more (duplet). The two carbon atoms are coloured differently so you can see that the C–C pairs come from both of them.

All three are covalent: they are made of non-metals only, and the electronegativity differences are small (C–H: 2.55 − 2.20 = 0.35; C–C: 0), far below 1.7.
CompoundStructureBondsTotal bondsShared pairs
Ethane C₂H₆H₃C–CH₃6 C–H single + 1 C–C single77
Ethene C₂H₄H₂C=CH₂4 C–H single + 1 C=C double56
Ethyne C₂H₂HC≡CH2 C–H single + 1 C≡C triple35
A double bond is one bond made of 2 pairs, and a triple bond is one bond made of 3 pairs. If your teacher counts "bonds" as single bonds (lines), ethene has 6 lines and ethyne 5, the same as the shared pairs. Write both counts to be safe. In every molecule each C has 8 electrons around it and each H has 2.

Extended activity 3 · Does the solution conduct?

Arrange the apparatus as shown in the figures and do the experiment: a cell, a galvanometer ഗാൽവനോമീറ്റർ and two electrodes dipping in common-salt solution കറിയുപ്പ് ലായനി, then in glucose solution ഗ്ലൂക്കോസ് ലായനി. Record your observations. On that basis, identify what type of compound common salt and glucose are.

⚡ Virtual conductivity lab
Choose a solution, then close the circuit.
SolutionGalvanometer needleConducts?Particles in the solutionType of compound
Common salt (NaCl)????
Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆)????
⚠ Use only low-voltage dry cells (one or two 1.5 V cells, or a 9 V battery) for this experiment. Never use mains electricity or a phone charger plugged into the wall. Keep your hands and the table dry, do not taste the solutions, and wash your hands afterwards.
Observation: with common-salt solution the galvanometer needle deflects; with glucose solution it does not deflect.
Inference: salt solution conducts electricity, because dissolved common salt gives free ions (Na⁺ and Cl⁻) that move to the electrodes. Common salt is an ionic compound. Glucose solution does not conduct, because glucose dissolves as whole molecules with no charge. Glucose is a covalent compound.
This matches the properties in the textbook: ionic compounds conduct when molten or dissolved; covalent compounds generally do not conduct electricity.
🔎 Why not dry salt? go further

If you put the electrodes into dry salt crystals, the needle does not move. In the solid the ions are locked in the crystal and cannot travel. Dissolving or melting sets them free. That is why the textbook says ionic compounds conduct only when molten or in solution.

Extended activity 4 · A bulletin board of bonds

Draw the chemical bonds in different compounds and display them on the bulletin board.

🛠️ How to do it as a class
  1. Divide the board into two halves: ionic (transfer) and covalent (sharing).
  2. Each group takes two or three substances and draws the electron dot diagram on a chart card, large and neat. Use two colours, or dots and crosses, for the two kinds of atom.
  3. Under each diagram write: the formula, the configurations, "transfer" or "sharing", the electronegativity difference, and one property or use.
  4. Add a strip across the top: "difference ≥ 1.7 → ionic · less than 1.7 → covalent".
  5. Or print the cards below, colour them and pin them up.

Chemical bonds in different compounds – Class 9 Chemistry, Chapter 3
🔑 The ideas that answered everything on this page

Transfer → ions → ionic bond (metal + non-metal). Sharing pairs → covalent bond (non-metals). Count shared pairs for single, double, triple. Electronegativity difference ≥ 1.7 → ionic. Valency = electrons given, taken or shared; cross over the valencies to write the formula.
