In-text Questions – Solutions

Every question asked inside the chapter, in the order of the book, with a model answer and the reason. The questions cover the kitchen as a lab, the signs of a chemical change, the four types of reaction, the rate of reaction and the five factors that control it. Tables 5.1 to 5.4 are all here, filled in, and two of them are also fill-ins you can check. Try each question in your science diary സയൻസ് ഡയറി first, then open the solution.

📖 Where each topic is explained
⚠️ Several experiments in this chapter use hazardous substances: lead acetate, iron sulphide with acid (H₂S), ammonium dichromate, lead nitrate, concentrated HCl, white phosphorus, burning, and ammonia. In this guide they are virtual labs or teacher demonstrations only.

1 · The kitchen is a chemistry lab (p 95)

Did you know that the kitchen in our home is a chemistry lab? Many physical and chemical changes take place there. List some of each.

Physical changes ഭൗതികമാറ്റം, where no new substance forms: ice melting, water boiling, salt or sugar dissolving, grinding rice and urad dal into batter, chopping vegetables.
Chemical changes രാസമാറ്റം, where new substances form: LPG or firewood burning, cooking rice and curry, batter fermenting, milk turning into curd, a cut apple browning, food spoiling, and the iron pan rusting. The good smell of a curry ("നല്ല മണം") comes from new substances formed when the food is cooked.

2 · Table 5.1 – physical or chemical? (p 96)

Classify the processes below as physical changes or chemical changes. Type physical or chemical.

Reason
Ice melting ഐസ് ഉരുകുന്നത്physicalstill water, only the state changes
Firewood burning വിറക് കത്തുന്നത്chemicalnew substances (CO₂, water, ash) form, with heat and light
Milk turning into curd പാൽ തൈരാകുന്നത്chemicalbacteria change the milk sugar into lactic acid; it cannot be turned back
Sugar dissolving in water പഞ്ചസാര ജലത്തിൽ ലയിക്കുന്നത്physicalsugar is still sugar and is recovered by evaporating
Water boiling വെള്ളം തിളയ്ക്കുന്നത്physicalthe steam is still water (H₂O)
In a chemical change രാസമാറ്റം one or more new substances form, usually with an energy change. Chemical reactions are part of technology and daily life: burning fuels, smelting iron, making glass and pottery, and making wine and cheese.

3 · Four experiments – signs of a chemical change (pp 96–97, Fig 5.1–5.2)

Heat a little sugar (C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁) on a spatula over a Bunsen burner. What is the colour of the product?
Add 2–3 mL of dilute HCl to a little sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) in a test tube (Fig 5.1). What do you observe?
Add 2–3 mL of potassium iodide (KI) solution to 2–3 mL of lead acetate (Pb(CH₃COO)₂) solution (Fig 5.2). In which part of the test tube is the product seen? What is its colour?
Add 2–3 mL of dilute HCl to a little iron sulphide (FeS) and warm. Is the smell familiar?
⚠️ Lead compounds are poisonous, and hydrogen sulphide (experiment 4) is a toxic gas. Experiments 3 and 4 are teacher demonstrations (4 in a fume cupboard). See the virtual bench on page 3.
1. The sugar melts, turns brown and then black (charring: carbon is left behind). It also smells of burnt sugar.
2. Bubbles (effervescence വാതകം): carbon dioxide gas is given off. Na₂CO₃ + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H₂O + CO₂↑.
3. A solid precipitate അവക്ഷിപ്തം forms and settles at the bottom of the test tube. Its colour is yellow (lead iodide, PbI₂).
4. Yes: the smell of rotten eggs ഗന്ധം. The gas is hydrogen sulphide, H₂S, which is poisonous.

Complete Table 5.2 on the basis of the experiments above.

Experiment പരീക്ഷണംHow the chemical change was identified
1The sugar changed colour (to black)
2A gas was given off (effervescence, CO₂)
3A (yellow) precipitate formed
4A smell was produced (rotten eggs, H₂S)
So a chemical change can be recognised by a colour change നിറവ്യത്യാസം, a gas given off, a smell, or a precipitate അവക്ഷിപ്തപ്പെടുക, and often by heat or light.

4 · Quicklime and water (pp 97–98)

Take a little quicklime നീറ്റുകക്ക (CaO) in a beaker and pour in a little water. Touch the outside of the beaker. What do you observe?

Write the chemical equation of the reaction.

The beaker becomes hot, and the mixture may hiss and give off steam. Heat is given out, so it is an exothermic reaction താപമോചക പ്രവർത്തനം. Calcium oxide reacts with water to give calcium hydroxide (slaked lime):
CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ (+ heat). Two substances combine to form one compound.

5 · Combination reactions (p 98)

N₂ + 3H₂ → 2NH₃

Which substances have combined in this reaction?
Which product is obtained?
  3. Look at 2SO₂ + O₂ → 2SO₃ too. Can you find more examples of combination reactions?
1. Nitrogen (N₂) and hydrogen (H₂). In 2SO₂ + O₂ → 2SO₃ the substances are sulphur dioxide and oxygen.
2. Ammonia (NH₃) and, in the second reaction, sulphur trioxide (SO₃): one product each time.
When two or more simple substances (elements or compounds) combine to form one new compound, it is a combination reaction സംയോജന രാസപ്രവർത്തനം.
3. More examples: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO · C + O₂ → CO₂ · 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O · H₂ + Cl₂ → 2HCl · 4Fe + 3O₂ → 2Fe₂O₃ · CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂.

6 · Decomposition reactions (pp 98–99, Fig 5.3)

Heat 3 g of ammonium dichromate ((NH₄)₂Cr₂O₇) in a conical flask whose mouth is closed with cotton. What change do you observe? (Teacher demonstration: the dust is toxic.)

Can you find more examples of decomposition reactions?
Ammonium dichromate: the orange crystals glow, sparks fly and they swell up into a fluffy green powder (chromium(III) oxide), with steam, like a small "volcano". The cotton stops the dust escaping. (NH₄)₂Cr₂O₇ → Cr₂O₃ + 4H₂O + N₂↑: a thermal decomposition താപീയ വിഘടനം.
1. Lead nitrate Pb(NO₃)₂ and calcium carbonate CaCO₃ (and ammonium dichromate).
2. Lead nitrate → lead oxide (PbO), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂, a toxic brown gas) and oxygen. Calcium carbonate → calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide.
A reaction in which one compound breaks down to form two or more substances is a decomposition reaction വിഘടന രാസപ്രവർത്തനം.
3. More examples: 2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂ · CuCO₃ → CuO + CO₂ · 2NaN₃ → 2Na + 3N₂ (air bag) · 2HgO → 2Hg + O₂ · 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂ (electrolysis) · ZnCO₃ → ZnO + CO₂.

7 · Heating copper carbonate (? box, p 99)

Heat a little copper carbonate (CuCO₃) in a boiling tube. What change do you observe? Which products form? Write the balanced chemical equation.

The green powder turns black, and a gas that turns lime water milky is given off. Products: copper oxide (CuO, black) and carbon dioxide.
CuCO₃ → CuO + CO₂↑ (already balanced: Cu 1 = 1, C 1 = 1, O 3 = 1 + 2). It is a decomposition reaction. Side box, air bags (p 99): 2NaN₃ → 2Na + 3N₂↑, in about 0.03 s.

8 · Sodium chloride and silver nitrate (pp 99–100, Fig 5.4)

Add 2–3 mL of silver nitrate (AgNO₃) solution to 2–3 mL of sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. What do you observe? NaCl + AgNO₃ → AgCl↓ + NaNO₃

(ചിത്രം 5.4) Which product is the precipitate? (Fig 5.4)
In the reactant sodium chloride, which ion is joined to the sodium ion?
In the products, which metal ion is the chloride ion joined to?
The nitrate ion of the second reactant, silver nitrate, is joined to which metal ion in the product?
A white precipitate forms at once, and it slowly turns grey-violet in light.
1. Silver chloride (AgCl). The ↓ marks it as the precipitate. NaNO₃ stays dissolved.
2. The chloride ion (Cl⁻). 3. The silver ion (Ag⁺). 4. The sodium ion (Na⁺).
The two compounds have exchanged their ions. This is a double decomposition reaction ദ്വിവിഘടന രാസപ്രവർത്തനം.

9 · Which ions are exchanged? (p 100)

Examine BaCl₂ + H₂SO₄ → BaSO₄↓ + 2HCl and identify which ions the compounds exchange.

Can you find more examples of double decomposition reactions?

BaCl₂ is made of Ba²⁺ and Cl⁻ ions, and H₂SO₄ of H⁺ and SO₄²⁻ ions. The partners are exchanged: Ba²⁺ joins SO₄²⁻ to give BaSO₄ (a white precipitate), and the 2H⁺ join the 2Cl⁻ to give 2HCl. In other words, the chloride ions (Cl⁻) and sulphate ion (SO₄²⁻) change places, or equivalently Ba²⁺ swaps with 2H⁺.
More examples: Pb(NO₃)₂ + 2KI → PbI₂↓ + 2KNO₃ (yellow) · CuSO₄ + 2NaOH → Cu(OH)₂↓ + Na₂SO₄ (blue) · KOH + HNO₃ → KNO₃ + H₂O · HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O · CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂↑.
Side box (p 100), three kinds: precipitation (MgCl₂ + H₂SO₄ → MgSO₄↓ + 2HCl, as in the book), gas-forming (CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂↑), and those giving a compound that does not separate into ions, such as neutralisation നിർവീരീകരണം (HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O).

10 · Zinc in hydrochloric acid – the pop test (pp 100–101, Fig 5.5)

(ചിത്രം 5.5) Put a few zinc granules into 5 mL of dilute HCl and bring a burning matchstick to the mouth of the tube. What do you observe? (Fig 5.5)

Which gas burns with a "pop" sound?
Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂↑. Which atom took the place of hydrogen of the reactant HCl in the product?
Find more examples of displacement reactions.
Bubbles form on the zinc, and at the mouth of the tube the gas burns with a small "pop" sound.
1. Hydrogen (H₂). 2. Zinc. It took the place of hydrogen in HCl, forming ZnCl₂ and setting hydrogen free.
Reactions in which one element in a compound is replaced by another element are displacement reactions ആദേശ രാസപ്രവർത്തനം.
3. More examples: Fe + CuSO₄ → FeSO₄ + Cu · Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu · Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂ · Cu + 2AgNO₃ → Cu(NO₃)₂ + 2Ag · Fe₂O₃ + 2Al → 2Fe + Al₂O₃ (thermite തെർമൈറ്റ്, used to weld rails).

11 · Table 5.3 – features of the four types (p 101)

You have met four different types of chemical reaction. Tabulate their features.

12 · Table 5.4 – classify and extend (? box, pp 101–102)

Classify the reactions below as combination, decomposition, double decomposition or displacement. Extend Table 5.4 with more examples. Type combination, decomposition, double decomposition or displacement.

5. SO₂ + H₂O → H₂SO₃2. CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂
3. 2HI → H₂ + I₂
4. Cu(NO₃)₂ + Na₂S → CuS + 2NaNO₃1. Zn + 2AgNO₃ → Zn(NO₃)₂ + 2Ag
CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂
N₂ + 3H₂ → 2NH₃
2SO₂ + O₂ → 2SO₃
2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO
H₂ + Cl₂ → 2HCl
(NH₄)₂Cr₂O₇ → Cr₂O₃ + 4H₂O + N₂
2Pb(NO₃)₂ → 2PbO + 4NO₂ + O₂
CuCO₃ → CuO + CO₂
2NaN₃ → 2Na + 3N₂
2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂
NaCl + AgNO₃ → AgCl + NaNO₃
BaCl₂ + H₂SO₄ → BaSO₄ + 2HCl
Pb(NO₃)₂ + 2KI → PbI₂ + 2KNO₃
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
NH₄Cl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O + NH₃
Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂
Fe + CuSO₄ → FeSO₄ + Cu
Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂
Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu
Fe₂O₃ + 2Al → 2Fe + Al₂O₃
How to decide: count the reactants and products. Many → one is combination. One → many is decomposition. Element + compound → element + compound is displacement. Two compounds → two compounds by swapping ions is double decomposition. The first row is the book's five reactions, and the second row extends the table. Practise with the classifier on page 5.

13 · Rate of reaction – Fig 5.6 (pp 102–103)

Some chemical processes take place in the pictures of Fig 5.6. Identify them.

Do all these reactions take place at the same speed?
When a tooth cavity is filled, think how hard eating would be if the mixture set onto the tooth very slowly.
Likewise, if the rusting of iron were very fast, what would be its harmful effects?
The pictures show an explosion സ്ഫോടനം, the rusting of iron തുരുമ്പിക്കൽ, the change in rocks with the climate (weathering), and filling a tooth cavity.
1. No. An explosion is over in a fraction of a second (very fast). A dental filling sets in minutes. Rusting takes days to months (slow). Weathering of rocks takes many years (very slow).
2. If the filling set very slowly, we could not eat or even close the mouth for hours. It is useful that it sets quickly (but not instantly, so the dentist has time to shape it).
3. Iron bridges, railway lines, vehicles, ships, gates, tools and roofing sheets would crumble within days. Buildings would be unsafe and there would be huge loss of money and danger to life.

What methods do we use to keep food from spoiling? • …… (fill the two blanks)

• Drying in the sun (dried fish, chillies, pappad). • Vacuum packing / airtight sealing. Also accepted: pickling in vinegar or oil, preserving in sugar syrup (jam, murabba), smoking, canning, boiling and pasteurising milk. All of these slow down the reactions (and the microbes) that spoil food. Not all reactions go at the same speed. Many factors control the rate of reaction രാസപ്രവർത്തനവേഗം.
Side box, collision theory കൊളിഷൻ സിദ്ധാന്തം (p 103): reactions happen when reactant particles collide. Only collisions that lead to products are effective collisions ഫലവത്തായ കൂട്ടിമുട്ടലുകൾ, and these need a certain minimum energy. More particles per unit volume and more energy → more effective collisions → faster rate.

14 · Nature of the reactants (p 103)

Equal volumes of dilute HCl in three test tubes; equal-sized pieces of copper, zinc and magnesium dropped in.

3 …… Record the observations for test tubes 1, 2 and 3.
In which test tube is the rate of reaction highest?
(? box) Sodium reacts vigorously with water at ordinary temperature, but magnesium reacts very slowly. Why?
1. Tube 1 (Cu): no reaction. Tube 2 (Zn): slow bubbles of hydrogen. Tube 3 (Mg): rapid fizzing, and the tube becomes warm.
2. Test tube 3, magnesium: Mg > Zn > Cu. The acid and the size of the pieces were the same, so the difference comes from the nature of the reactants
3. Sodium is much more reactive than magnesium. It loses its single outer electron very easily, so a far larger share of its collisions with water molecules are effective. Again, the nature of the reactant decides the rate. Allotropes box (p 104): white phosphorus catches fire in air, while red phosphorus is safe in air (white P is for teachers only).
Virtual lab: page 7.

15 · Concentration (pp 104–105, Fig 5.7)

Concentration ഗാഢത is the number of molecules in unit volume. Then, in which test tube is the number of HCl molecules per unit volume greater: concentrated or dilute HCl?
Magnesium ribbon of equal mass is put into both tubes. Record your observations for each.
In which test tube is the rate higher?
Heated steel wool glows red and oxidises slowly in air (Fig A), but burns strongly in an oxygen-rich atmosphere (Fig B). What is the reason?
1. The concentrated HCl (tube 1).
2. Tube 1, concentrated: vigorous bubbling, and the ribbon disappears fast. Tube 2, dilute: slow bubbling.
3. Tube 1. There are more reactant molecules per unit volume, so more particles per unit volume give more effective collisions and a higher rate.
4. Concentration of oxygen. Air is only about 21 % oxygen, while the flask is almost pure oxygen, about 5 times the concentration. Many more oxygen molecules collide with the hot iron every second, so there are many more effective collisions and it burns brilliantly with sparks. (Teacher demonstration only.)

1. Calcium carbonate (marble) and hydrochloric acid. 2. Marble is a solid, and the acid a liquid (a solution).
3. As printed: CaCO₃(s) + 2HCl(l) → CaCl₂(s) + H₂O(l) + CO₂(g). (Go further: in solution, HCl(aq) and CaCl₂(aq).)
4. No: the powder reacts much faster. 5. No: the powder has a much greater surface area
6. The number of collisions per second increases, so there are more effective collisions. 7. The rate becomes even faster.
8. Small pieces have a larger surface in contact with the oxygen of the air, so there are more collisions, more effective collisions and faster burning.
9. Chewing food well, crushed ginger and garlic, thin slices that cook fast, sawdust and dry leaves catching fire easily, fine iron wool rusting quickly, powdered medicine acting faster (and, go further, dust explosions in flour mills and coal mines).
Side box (p 106), physical state ഭൗതികാവസ്ഥ: solid ZnSO₄ and Ba(NO₃)₂ do not react, but their solutions give white BaSO₄ at once. Petrol vapour burns explosively, much faster than liquid petrol.

? (p 106)

Dilute HCl in two tubes: a big piece of eggshell in the first, an equal amount of powdered eggshell in the second. In which tube is the rate higher? What is the reason? Write the equation.
Fireworks use magnesium, which burns with a brilliant light, and it is used as a powder. What could be the reason?
1. The second tube (powder). The powder has a larger surface area, so more collisions with acid particles give more effective collisions. CaCO₃ + 2HCl → CaCl₂ + H₂O + CO₂↑ (eggshell is mainly calcium carbonate).
2. Magnesium powder has a huge surface area, so a vast number of Mg atoms meet oxygen at once. It burns in an instant with a brilliant white flash: 2Mg + O₂ → 2MgO. (Never handle fireworks yourself.)

17 · Temperature (pp 106–107, Fig 5.9)

NH₄Cl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O + NH₃↑

Which products form when ammonium chloride and sodium hydroxide react?
After mixing 2 mL of each solution, did you observe any product?
Waft the air towards your nose as in Fig 5.9. Do you notice any smell?
Warm the tube and test the smell again.
1. Sodium chloride, water and ammonia gas. 2. No visible change, because everything stays colourless and dissolved. 3. Only a very faint smell, if any.
4. The sharp pungent smell of ammonia is strong after warming. The rate increased with temperature
Key idea (p 107): the minimum kinetic energy ഗതികോർജം that reactant particles need to change into products is the threshold energy ത്രെഷോൾഡ് എനർജി. Heating raises the kinetic energy, so more particles reach the threshold energy, giving more effective collisions and a faster reaction.

Equal amounts of dilute sodium thiosulphate (Na₂S₂O₃) solution in two tubes; one is warmed for a short time; the same amount of dilute HCl is added to both. Record your observation. In which tube did the precipitate form quickly? Which factor affected the rate?

Both tubes slowly turn cloudy pale yellow (a precipitate of sulphur). The precipitate forms quickly in the warmed tube. The factor is temperature. (Go further: Na₂S₂O₃ + 2HCl → 2NaCl + S↓ + SO₂↑ + H₂O.) Side box (p 108): dosa and idli batter rises quickly at room temperature but slowly in the fridge, and light sticks glow more brightly when warm.

18 · Catalysts – hydrogen peroxide and manganese dioxide (p 108)

2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂↑. A glowing incense stick is held in a boiling tube of hydrogen peroxide solution, and then again after a little MnO₂ is added.

Is there any change in the burning of the incense stick (before MnO₂)?
After adding MnO₂, what do you observe now?
After filtering, what is the substance left on the filter paper?
1. Hardly any change: hydrogen peroxide decomposes very slowly on its own.
2. The liquid froths and the incense stick glows brightly / bursts into flame. The decomposition is now fast and gives much more oxygen. Manganese dioxide increased the rate.
3. Manganese dioxide, with its amount and properties unchanged.
Substances that increase the rate of a reaction without themselves undergoing a permanent chemical change are catalysts ഉൽപ്രേരകം. MnO₂ is the catalyst here.

19 · Catalysts in the Haber and contact processes (p 109)

In the same way, can you identify the catalysts in these reactions?

N2(g) + 3H2(g) Fe⇌200 atm, 700 K 2NH3(g) 2SO2(g) + O2(g) V2O5⇌2 atm, 720 K 2SO3(g)
1. Haber process ഹേബർ പ്രക്രിയ (ammonia): iron (Fe). 2. Contact process സമ്പർക്ക പ്രക്രിയ (sulphuric acid): vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅).
The sign ⇌ shows reversible reactions ഉഭയദിശാ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ. Besides the nature, concentration and surface area of the reactants, temperature and catalysts also affect the rate. Catalysis in nature: enzymes എൻസൈമുകൾ are protein catalysts, and amylase in saliva changes starch into maltose. The catalyst-and-magic box covers sugar candy that burns with a little ash, and the bombardier beetle.
