Let Us Assess & Extended Activities – Solutions

All ten end-of-chapter questions with model answers. Sort the reactions into their four types, balance the equations with particle pictures and a live atom tally, and watch collision-theory animations for the questions on rate. Try each question yourself first, then open the answer. After that come the three extended activities തുടർപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ as virtual labs: a gas-syringe experiment with a live volume–time graph, the warm/cold persulphate–iodide test with manganese dioxide, and hydrogen + iodine at two temperatures.

📖 What you need (pages 4–8 of this guide)

Parts marked go further are beyond the textbook. Numbers marked illustrative come from a simple model, not from a real measurement.

Question 1 · Sort six reactions into four types

Classify the reactions below as combination, decomposition, double decomposition and displacement reactions, and write them in the table.

Zn + FeSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Fe
NaCl + AgNO₃ → NaNO₃ + AgCl
2Pb(NO₃)₂ → 2PbO + 4NO₂ + O₂
H₂ + I₂ → 2HI
Pb(NO₃)₂ + 2KI → PbI₂ + 2KNO₃
NH₄NO₂ → 2H₂O + N₂

Count the substances on each side. One reactant → decomposition. One product → combination. A lone element on each side → displacement. Two compounds that swap partners → double decomposition.

👆 Tap the type for each reaction – the table fills itself
Zn + FeSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Fe
NaCl + AgNO₃ → NaNO₃ + AgCl
2Pb(NO₃)₂ → 2PbO + 4NO₂ + O₂
H₂ + I₂ → 2HI
Pb(NO₃)₂ + 2KI → PbI₂ + 2KNO₃
NH₄NO₂ → 2H₂O + N₂

H₂ + I₂ → 2HI2Pb(NO₃)₂ → 2PbO + 4NO₂ + O₂
NH₄NO₂ → 2H₂O + N₂
NaCl + AgNO₃ → NaNO₃ + AgCl
Pb(NO₃)₂ + 2KI → PbI₂ + 2KNO₃
Zn + FeSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Fe
Reasons: H₂ + I₂: two substances give one product. Lead nitrate and ammonium nitrite: one compound breaks into two or more. NaCl + AgNO₃ and Pb(NO₃)₂ + 2KI: two compounds exchange ions (both give a precipitate: white AgCl, yellow PbI₂). Zn + FeSO₄: the element zinc takes the place of iron.

Question 2 · Write, balance and classify

Write the balanced chemical equations for the reactions below and classify them as combination, decomposition or displacement reactions.

Formulae first, using valencies: Mg 2, N 3, Zn 2, Al 3, Pb 2, CO₃ 2, NO₃ 1. Then change only the numbers in front. In (c) keep the nitrate group NO₃ together and count it as one unit.

🎬 Step by step – particle pictures and an atom tally
👆 Now classify the three reactions
a) 3Mg + N₂ → Mg₃N₂
b) ZnCO₃ → ZnO + CO₂
c) 2Al + 3Pb(NO₃)₂ → 2Al(NO₃)₃ + 3Pb

a) 3Mg + N₂ → Mg₃N₂ – combination. (Mg 3 = 3; N 2 = 2. Formula: valencies Mg 2, N 3 cross over → Mg₃N₂.)
b) ZnCO₃ →(heat) ZnO + CO₂ – decomposition (thermal decomposition താപീയ വിഘടനം). Already balanced: Zn 1 = 1, C 1 = 1, O 3 = 1 + 2.
c) 2Al + 3Pb(NO₃)₂ → 2Al(NO₃)₃ + 3Pb – displacement. (NO₃: 3 × 2 = 6 = 2 × 3; Al 2 = 2; Pb 3 = 3.) Aluminium is more reactive than lead, so it pushes lead out of its compound.

Question 3 · Identify the type

Identify the type of each reaction.

Copper powder heated in a china dish forms black copper oxide.
Silver nitrate solution and sodium chloride solution react to form silver chloride and sodium nitrate solution.
Ferrous sulphate crystals heated in a test tube form ferric oxide, sulphur dioxide and sulphur trioxide.
👆 Tap the type
i) copper + oxygen (heated) → black copper oxide
ii) silver nitrate + sodium chloride → silver chloride + sodium nitrate
iii) ferrous sulphate (heated) → ferric oxide + SO₂ + SO₃

i) 2Cu + O₂ → 2CuO (black) – combination.
ii) AgNO₃ + NaCl → AgCl↓ + NaNO₃ – double decomposition; a white precipitate അവക്ഷിപ്തം of silver chloride forms, so it is a precipitation reaction.
iii) 2FeSO₄ → Fe₂O₃ + SO₂↑ + SO₃↑ – decomposition (thermal decomposition). Check: Fe 2 = 2; S 2 = 1 + 1; O 8 = 3 + 2 + 3.

Question 4 · What is a displacement reaction?

What are displacement reactions? Write an example.

🔩 Zinc pushes copper out
A displacement reaction ആദേശ രാസപ്രവർത്തനം is a reaction in which one element in a compound is replaced by another element.
Example: Zn + CuSO₄ → ZnSO₄ + Cu (zinc replaces copper; the blue colour fades and reddish-brown copper appears). Another: Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂↑ (zinc replaces hydrogen; the gas burns with a “pop”).

Question 5 · Slow and fast reactions

Give two examples of reactions that take days or months to complete, and two that are complete in seconds or minutes.

👆 Days/months or seconds/minutes?
Rusting of an iron gate
Explosion of a firework
Weathering of rocks
AgNO₃ solution + NaCl solution → white AgCl
Inflation of a car air bag (2NaN₃ → 2Na + 3N₂)
Ripening of fruit go further
Burning of a magnesium ribbon

⏳ A time line of reaction speeds (log scale: each tick is a much longer time)
Days or months: rusting of iron തുരുമ്പിക്കൽ; weathering of rocks (years); also ripening of fruit, souring of milk left for days go further.
Seconds or minutes: explosion of fireworks സ്ഫോടനം; burning of LPG or a magnesium ribbon; formation of the white AgCl precipitate when AgNO₃ and NaCl solutions are mixed; inflation of an air bag (about 0.03 s); setting of a dental filling (minutes).
Any two of each are enough.

Question 6 · Big pieces or fine powder?

How does the rate of reaction differ when a gas reacts with big pieces of a solid and with its fine powder? Explain the reason.

🎬 Step by step – cut the same mass smaller
🎯 Count the collisions – one lump vs the same mass as powder
Same mass of solid, same gas, same speed. Press Start and compare the two counters.

Simplified model: every hit on the surface is counted as a collision; in a real reaction only the hits with at least the threshold energy are effective, but that fraction is the same in both boxes.

The gas reacts much faster with the fine powder.
Reason: a gas can react only with the particles on the surface of the solid. Breaking the same mass into a fine powder gives a much larger surface area പ്രതലപരപ്പളവ് (one 2 cm cube: 24 cm²; the same cube cut into eight 1 cm cubes: 48 cm²). More surface → more gas particles collide with the solid per second → more effective collisions ഫലവത്തായ കൂട്ടിമുട്ടലുകൾ → higher rate. (This is why magnesium powder flashes in fireworks and fine coal or flour dust can even explode.)

Question 7 · Faster without heating?

A reaction with a fixed amount of reactants is very slow at room temperature. Can its rate be increased without changing the temperature? Explain.

🎬 Three ways to speed it up – thermometer locked at 25 °C
Yes. The rate depends on the number of effective collisions per second. Without changing the temperature we can still increase them:
1. Increase the concentration ഗാഢത: more reactant particles per unit volume യൂണിറ്റ് വ്യാപ്തം (for the same amount, use a smaller volume of solution) → more collisions → faster.
2. Increase the surface area of a solid reactant (use it as a powder) → more particles exposed → more collisions → faster.
3. Use a suitable catalyst ഉൽപ്രേരകം (e.g. MnO₂ for H₂O₂): it increases the rate without being used up. go further A catalyst gives the reaction an easier path with a lower energy barrier, so more collisions are effective at the same temperature.

Question 8 · Zinc and hydrochloric acid

Zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid to give hydrogen gas.

Write the chemical equation of this reaction.
To which type does this reaction belong?
Suggest two ways to increase the amount of hydrogen.
📈 “More hydrogen” or “hydrogen sooner”? Compare with the starting experiment

illustrative numbers Zinc is the limiting reactant in the starting experiment; the acid is in excess.

a) Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂↑
b) Displacement reaction ആദേശ രാസപ്രവർത്തനം: zinc replaces hydrogen in hydrochloric acid.
c) Keep the two ideas apart:
• To get a greater amount (total volume) of hydrogen, use more zinc with enough acid (or more acid if the zinc is in excess). The amount of product depends on the amount of reactants.
• To get the hydrogen faster (more in each minute), use zinc powder instead of granules (more surface area), more concentrated acid (more particles per unit volume) or warm the acid (more particles reach the threshold energy). These increase the rate but not the final amount.
In an exam write two ways and say which idea you mean, e.g. “use powdered zinc and concentrated HCl: more effective collisions, so more hydrogen is produced in the same time”.

Question 9 · Hydrogen peroxide

The equation for hydrogen peroxide changing into water and oxygen is given: 2H₂O₂ → 2H₂O + O₂

To which type does this reaction belong?
Which substance is used to increase the rate of decomposition of H₂O₂? By what general name is it known?
🫧 H₂O₂ with and without manganese dioxide
a) Decomposition reaction വിഘടന രാസപ്രവർത്തനം: one compound, H₂O₂, breaks into two substances, water and oxygen.
b) Manganese dioxide (MnO₂). It is known as a catalyst ഉൽപ്രേരകം: a substance that increases the rate of a reaction without itself undergoing a permanent chemical change (it is recovered unchanged by filtering).

Question 10 · Ammonium chloride and sodium hydroxide

Solutions of ammonium chloride and sodium hydroxide are taken in a test tube and heated.

Which gas is formed?
Which factor helped to increase the rate of reaction?
What is threshold energy?
Why does the rate of reaction increase when the temperature increases?
🎬 Step by step – particles above the threshold line
⚠ Ammonia has a sharp, choking smell. Never put your nose over a test tube: waft the gas towards your nose with your hand (Fig 5.9). Heat only under your teacher's supervision, with the tube pointing away from everyone.
NH₄Cl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O + NH₃↑
a) Ammonia (NH₃) – its pungent smell becomes strong on heating.
b) Temperature താപനില (heating).
c) Threshold energy ത്രെഷോൾഡ് എനർജി is the minimum kinetic energy that reactant particles must have, when they collide, to change into products.
d) Heating increases the kinetic energy ഗതികോർജം of the particles. They move faster and collide more often, and many more particles reach the threshold energy. So the number of effective collisions per second increases and the reaction becomes faster. (Heating does not lower the threshold energy; it gives more particles enough energy.)

Extended activities

🛑 Read this first – do these only with your teacher

These activities use acids, heating and gases. In this guide they are virtual labs: try every setting here, and in school do them only with your teacher in the laboratory. Concentrated hydrochloric acid, heating a closed vessel and the hydrogen–iodine experiment are teacher demonstrations only. Never try them at home. The numbers on the graphs come from a simple model and are illustrative.

Extended activity 1 · Magnesium and hydrochloric acid with a gas syringe

Take 25 mL of dilute HCl in a conical flask. Coil a 15 cm magnesium ribbon, drop it into the flask and start a stopwatch. Record the volume of hydrogen gas produced every 30 seconds (in the gas syringe). Swirl the flask gently at intervals so that the reactants keep reacting. Afterwards draw a graph with the volume of hydrogen on the Y axis and time on the X axis.

How can the change in the rate of reaction be explained?
Repeat with 25 mL of concentrated HCl instead of dilute HCl and draw the graph. What change in the rate do you see?

Warm the apparatus to 50 °C, add a 5 cm Mg ribbon and record the volume every 30 s. Draw the graph and explain how the change in temperature affected the rate.
🧪 Virtual gas-syringe lab with a live graph
Acid (25 mL)
Magnesium
Form
Water bath

illustrative numbers Model: 15 cm of ribbon gives about 90 mL of hydrogen and 5 cm about 30 mL; the acid is in excess. Keep one curve, change one setting, run again and compare. The dashed line touching the curve is its slope (the rate) at the chosen time.

⚠ Teacher only for the concentrated acid and the 50 °C bath. Concentrated HCl gives off choking fumes and burns skin; with magnesium it fizzes violently and gets hot. Hydrogen is flammable: no flames nearby. Wear goggles; never at home.
Equation: Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂↑ (displacement).
i) The rate is greatest at the start, in the first 30 seconds: the graph is steepest there (the largest volume of hydrogen per 30 s).
ii) The slope (steepness) of the graph shows the rate. As the reaction goes on, magnesium and acid are used up: there are fewer reactant particles per unit volume and less magnesium surface, so there are fewer effective collisions per second. The slope decreases, and the graph becomes flat (horizontal) when the magnesium is used up and the reaction stops.
iii) With concentrated HCl the curve is much steeper: the rate is higher, because there are more HCl particles per unit volume → more effective collisions. The final volume is the same (the same magnesium, acid in excess); it is only reached sooner.
iv) The 5 cm ribbon gives a smaller final volume (less magnesium) than 15 cm. The powder of the same mass gives a steeper curve than the ribbon, with the same final volume: larger surface area → more collisions → faster.
v) At 50 °C the curve is steeper than at room temperature: the particles have more kinetic energy, more of them reach the threshold energy, so there are more effective collisions and the rate increases.

Extended activity 2 · Persulphate and iodide: warm, cold and MnO₂

Take equal volumes of potassium persulphate (K₂S₂O₈) solution in two test tubes and warm one of them. Add equal volumes of potassium iodide solution to both. In which tube does the brown colour of iodine form faster? Write the equation. If a little manganese dioxide is added to the unwarmed tube, how does the rate change? What is the role of manganese dioxide here?

🟤 Virtual lab – which tube turns brown first?
Three tubes with equal volumes of K₂S₂O₈ solution. Press the button to add equal volumes of KI solution.

illustrative times In the textbook activity the MnO₂ is added to the cold tube; here the three tubes are shown side by side for comparison.

⚠ Do this only with your teacher. Potassium persulphate is a strong oxidiser that irritates skin and eyes, and iodine stains. Wear goggles, warm the tube only in a water bath, and wash your hands afterwards.
The brown colour of iodine forms faster in the warmed tube: at the higher temperature the particles have more kinetic energy, more of them reach the threshold energy and there are more effective collisions.
K₂S₂O₈ + 2KI → 2K₂SO₄ + I₂ (check: K 4 = 4; S 2 = 2; O 8 = 8; I 2 = 2).
Adding a little MnO₂ to the unwarmed tube makes the brown colour appear much faster, even without heating. MnO₂ acts as a catalyst ഉൽപ്രേരകം: it increases the rate and is itself not permanently changed (it remains as the black solid).

Extended activity 3 · Hydrogen and iodine at room temperature and at 130 °C

Pass a fixed amount of hydrogen gas into iodine crystals in a closed vessel at room temperature and observe how fast hydrogen iodide forms. Repeat after heating to 130 °C. What change in the rate of reaction occurs? Explain.

🟣 Virtual teacher demonstration – H₂ + I₂ in two closed flasks
Press Run. Watch the HI counters.

Simplified model: a collision forms HI only if it has at least the threshold energy; the chance of that is far higher at 130 °C.

⚠ Teacher demonstration only. Hydrogen is a flammable gas, iodine vapour harms the eyes and lungs, and a heated closed vessel can burst. Never at home.
H₂ + I₂ → 2HI (a combination reaction).
At room temperature hydrogen iodide forms very slowly; at 130 °C it forms much faster. On heating, the molecules gain kinetic energy: they move faster and collide more often, and many more collisions have at least the threshold energy. So there are more effective collisions per second and the rate increases. (Iodine also turns into violet vapour on heating, so more iodine molecules can meet hydrogen molecules.)
Go further: this reaction is reversible, H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g) ഉഭയദിശാ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ, so some violet iodine always remains.
🔑 The ideas that answered everything on this page

Types: one product → combination; one reactant → decomposition; two compounds swap ions → double decomposition; an element takes another's place → displacement. Rate: more effective collisions per second = faster. Raise them with higher concentration, more surface area, higher temperature (more particles reach the threshold energy) or a catalyst. The steepness of a volume–time graph is the rate; its final height is the amount.
