In-text Questions – Solutions

Every question asked inside the chapter, in the order of the book, with a model answer and the reason. The questions cover solutes and solvents, concentration and mass percentage, saturated and supersaturated solutions, solubility, suspensions and colloids, and food additives. Tables 6.1 to 6.5 are all here, filled in, and two of them are also fill-ins you can check. Try each question in your science diary സയൻസ് ഡയറി first, then open the solution.

📖 Where each topic is explained
⚠️ Some experiments in this chapter need care: heating solutions on a burner (adult supervision), potassium permanganate (stains, oxidiser), dilute hydrochloric acid (handled by the teacher) and turpentine or kerosene (flammable). Never taste any lab chemical.

1 · Enamel paint and turpentine (pp 113–114)

After painting a metal box for the science fair with black enamel paint, a student tried to wash the brush in water, but the paint did not come off. What could be the reason?

Enamel paint does not dissolve in water. Later, on the teacher's advice, the brush was dipped in turpentine and it could be cleaned, because enamel paint dissolves in turpentine. Water is a polar solvent and enamel paint is non-polar, while turpentine is non-polar like the paint: like dissolves like.

You know many substances that dissolve in water: common salt, sugar, …… And those that do not dissolve: enamel paint, sand, …… Complete the lists.

Dissolve in water: common salt, sugar, copper sulphate, washing soda, glucose, potassium permanganate, alum, baking soda.
Do not dissolve in water: enamel paint, sand, oil, chalk powder, wax, iron filings, kerosene, sawdust.
The substance that dissolves is the solute ലീനം. The substance it dissolves in is the solvent ലായകം. When a solute dissolves in a solvent, a solution ലായനി forms.

2 · Table 6.1 – solute, solvent and their states (p 114)

Some solutions are given in the table. Is there any relation between the state of the solution and the state of the solvent? Look at the table.

Yes. In every row, the solution is in the same state as its solvent: brass (solvent copper, solid) is a solid solution, while salt water, soda water and copper sulphate solution (solvent water, liquid) are liquid solutions. In most solutions, the physical state of the solution is the physical state of the solvent.

3 · Air, brass and solvents (p 115)

Why is pure air a gaseous solution? (Look at Fig 6.1.)
How are the solute and the solvent of a solution decided?
The alloy brass contains 34 % zinc (Zn) and 66 % copper (Cu). Which is the solute and which is the solvent?
Which component is the solvent in air? Why?
Which solvent dissolved the enamel paint?
Add kerosene and petrol to water, one at a time. Do they dissolve? Why?
1. Air is a homogeneous mixture of several gases (nitrogen 78 %, oxygen 20.9 %, argon 0.90 %, carbon dioxide 0.03 %, other gases 0.17 %). It has the same composition in every part, and its components do not react with each other. So it is a solution, and since all its components are gases, it is a gaseous solution വാതകലായനി.
2. By their amounts: കുറഞ്ഞ അളവിലുള്ള ഘടകം ലീനവും കൂടിയ അളവിലുള്ള ഘടകം ലായകവും ആണ്. the component present in the smaller amount is the solute and the one in the larger amount is the solvent. (In an aqueous solution, water is always the solvent, whatever its amount.)
3. Solute: zinc (34 %). Solvent: copper (66 %).
4. Nitrogen, because it is present in the largest amount (78 %).
5. Turpentine.
6. No, they do not dissolve: they form a separate layer on top of the water. Water is a polar പോളാർ compound, while kerosene and petrol are non-polar നോൺപോളാർ. A solute dissolves in a solvent of the same kind: like dissolves like Salt (ionic) dissolves in water (polar), and enamel paint (non-polar) dissolves in turpentine (non-polar).

4 · Table 6.2 – uses of solvents in daily life (p 116)

This table is complete in the book. Learn it as it is.

Water is called the universal solvent സാർവിക ലായകം because it dissolves so many substances.

5 · Concentration – the KMnO₄ beakers (p 117)

Take the same amount of water in two beakers. Put one or two crystals of potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) in the first and five or six crystals in the second. Observe the colour of each.

Beaker 1: ……   Beaker 2: …… What is the reason for the difference in colour?

Beaker 1: light pink / light purple. Beaker 2: deep purple.
Reason: the amount of water is the same, but more solute is dissolved in beaker 2, so its concentration is higher. The concentration of a solution depends on the amount of solute in it.
The concentration ലായനിയുടെ ഗാഢത of a solution is the amount of solute dissolved in a definite amount of the solution. Little solute: a dilute solution നേർത്ത ലായനി. More solute: a concentrated solution ഗാഢലായനി.

Suppose 10 g of salt is dissolved in 90 g of water. How is the concentration worked out as a mass percentage? Fill in: mass of solute = …… g, mass of solvent = …… g.

Mass of solute = 10 g · mass of solvent = 90 g · mass of solution = 10 g + 90 g = 100 g Mass percentage = (mass of solute ÷ mass of solution) × 100 = (10 ÷ 100) × 100 = 10 % മാസ് പെർസെന്റേജ്: the mass of solute in every 100 g of solution.

6 · Mass percentage problems (p 118)

If someone says the concentration of the salt water they made is 15 %, what does it mean?

There is 15 g of salt in every 100 g of the solution, that is, 15 g of salt + 85 g of water. (Not 15 g of salt in 100 g of water.)

A solution is made by adding 2 g of a substance A to 18 g of water. Calculate the mass percentage of the solution.

Mass of solute = 2 g · mass of solvent = 18 g · mass of solution = 2 + 18 = 20 g Mass percentage = (2 ÷ 20) × 100 = 10 % Common mistake: dividing by 18 (the solvent) gives 11.1 %, which is wrong. Always divide by the mass of the solution.
The book adds that mass percentage matters in industry: the bleaching solution used in industry is a 3.62 % (by mass) aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). This shows how important exact amounts are.

How much solute can be dissolved in a solvent? (Activity 1: add ammonium chloride (NH₄Cl) bit by bit to 100 mL of water, stirring, at a constant temperature.)

Only up to a limit. At first the NH₄Cl dissolves, but after some time, however much you stir, the extra solid stays at the bottom without dissolving. A solution in which the maximum amount of solute has dissolved at a given temperature is a saturated solution പൂരിത ലായനി. Before that point it is an unsaturated solution അപൂരിത ലായനി (Activity 2): it can still dissolve more solute.

7 · Supersaturated solutions and growing crystals (pp 119–120)

(Activity 3) When you made the saturated solution of ammonium chloride, a little solute was left undissolved. Is there a way to dissolve it? Heat it. Keep adding a little more solute and heating. What happened? Does the solute dissolve?

Yes. On heating, the undissolved NH₄Cl dissolves, and the extra solute added also dissolves. At a higher temperature the water can dissolve more NH₄Cl (Fig 6.4).

Now cool the solution slowly to room temperature without disturbing it. Does the solute come out (precipitate)? Record your observation.

Usually crystals of NH₄Cl separate out at the bottom as it cools (Fig 6.4): the extra solute that dissolved at the higher temperature comes out of solution. But if it is cooled very carefully, slowly and without disturbance, the extra solute often stays dissolved. The solution then holds more solute than a saturated solution can at that temperature. This is a supersaturated solution അതിപൂരിത ലായനി.

Will a supersaturated solution stay like that permanently? Why?

No, it is not stable. It holds more solute than it can keep dissolved at that temperature. A small disturbance, a speck of dust, scratching the glass, or dropping in a tiny crystal (a seed crystal) makes the extra solute crystallise out quickly. What is left is an ordinary saturated solution.

(Fig 6.5). Hang a small seed crystal of CuSO₄ on a thread in a supersaturated CuSO₄ solution, and one of KNO₃ in a supersaturated KNO₃ solution. What change do you see after a short time? Observe again after a day and record the results.

After a short time the seed crystals begin to grow: the extra solute crystallises on them. After a day there are much bigger crystals: blue crystals of copper sulphate, and colourless, needle-like crystals of potassium nitrate. More solute also settles as crystals at the bottom.
The process in which crystals of the solute form when a supersaturated solution is cooled slowly is called crystallization പരലീകരണം.

8 · Solubility and the solubility curve (pp 121–123)

Take 50 mL of water in each of two beakers. Weigh out 100 g each of powdered common salt (NaCl) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃). Add the salt bit by bit to the first beaker and the bicarbonate to the second, stirring slowly, until each solution is saturated. Weigh what is left of each. Did the same amounts dissolve? Why are the amounts different?

No. Much more common salt dissolves than sodium bicarbonate. At room temperature, about 18 g of NaCl but only about 5 g of NaHCO₃ dissolves in 50 mL of water. (Typical values. Your class result will be close to these.)
Reason: the amount that dissolves depends on the nature of the solute പദാർഥത്തിന്റെ സ്വഭാവം. Different substances have different solubilities.
Solubility ലേയത്വം is the amount of solute, in grams, needed to saturate 100 g of the solvent at a given temperature.

Does solubility increase when the temperature rises? Look at the solubility curves ലേയത്വ കർവ് in Fig 6.6 and answer:

What change generally happens to solubility as the temperature rises? Increases / decreases.
Which substance's solubility decreases as the temperature rises?
Which has the highest solubility at 30 °C?
What is special about the solubility of sodium chloride compared with the other salts?
1. It generally increases.
2. Calcium sulphate: its curve is low and falls slightly at higher temperatures.
3. Potassium nitrate (KNO₃), read from the book's graph (Fig 6.6). Its curve rises steeply and is the highest at 30 °C.
4. The solubility of NaCl changes very little with temperature. Its curve is almost flat, at about 36–40 g per 100 g of water.

Prepare a note on the relation between solubility and temperature.

For most solid solutes, solubility in water increases as the temperature rises, but by different amounts. For potassium nitrate it rises very steeply. For potassium chloride and ammonium chloride it rises steadily. For sodium chloride it hardly changes. A few substances behave differently: the solubility of calcium sulphate falls slightly as the water gets hotter, and Glauber's salt becomes less soluble above 32.4 °C. For gases, solubility decreases as the temperature rises: warm water holds less dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide. So the effect of temperature depends on the solute. Solubility must always be stated together with the temperature.

Are there other factors that affect solubility? (Sodium chloride dissolves well in water, only a little in alcohol, and not at all in kerosene.)

When a soda bottle is opened, CO₂ gas froths and bubbles out. Why? Soda water is made by dissolving carbon dioxide in water at high pressure. Which factor affected the solubility here?

List the factors that affect solubility, from your observations so far.

Yes. NaCl dissolves well in water, a little in alcohol and not in kerosene, so the nature of the solvent matters too.
Soda: CO₂ is dissolved in water at high pressure and the bottle is sealed. When it is opened, the pressure falls, so the water can hold much less CO₂. The extra gas escapes as bubbles (froth). The factor is pressure മർദം.
Factors that affect solubility: 1. the nature of the solute · 2. the nature of the solvent · 3. temperature · 4. pressure (for gases).

Look at the solubility curve of Glauber's salt ഗ്ലോബേഴ്സ് സാൾട്ട് (Na₂SO₄·10H₂O). Find what is special about its solubility, compared with other salts.

According to the book's graph, its solubility rises from 47.6 g at 0 °C to a maximum of 49.7 g at 32.4 °C. Above 32.4 °C it decreases as the temperature rises further. Most salts keep becoming more soluble as they are heated, so this behaviour is called anomalous solubility അസാധാരണ ലേയത്വം.
🔭 Go further – the book's side box (p 123)
Glauber's salt is hydrated sodium sulphate, used in laxative medicines. Up to 32.4 °C it exists as the hydrate Na₂SO₄·10H₂O; dissolving it absorbs heat, so its solubility increases with temperature. Above 32.4 °C it changes into anhydrous Na₂SO₄; dissolving this gives out heat, so its solubility tends to decrease as the temperature rises.

1. No. The chalk particles are spread unevenly and settle at the bottom, so different parts have different amounts of chalk. Reason for the difference: the size of the solute particles. In a true solution they are so small that they cannot be seen even with a microscope, and they cannot scatter light. In a suspension they are big enough to be seen with the naked eye, they scatter light, they settle because of gravity, and they can be filtered off.

10 · Colloids (p 125, Table 6.4)

The particles in milk cannot be seen and do not settle, but the light path is visible. Mixtures between solutions and suspensions like this are colloids കൊളോയിഡുകൾ. Milk is a colloid.

Why does the path of the projector's light become clearly visible in a cinema or smart classroom when dust rises into the air?

The dust particles are of colloidal size (1–1000 nm). They scatter the light sideways into our eyes, so the path of the beam is visible.

Dissolve 2 g of sodium thiosulphate (Na₂S₂O₃·5H₂O) in 50 mL of water in a beaker placed in a beam of light. Add 2–3 drops of dilute HCl, stir and watch. Write the observation.

The clear solution slowly turns milky, pale yellow, and the path of the light beam becomes visible. Later, yellowish particles settle at the bottom. The reaction forms sulphur in colloidal form, which scatters light. As time passes more sulphur forms, the particles grow, and finally the sulphur settles as a suspension. This scattering of light by colloidal particles is the Tyndall effect ടിൻഡൽ പ്രഭാവം.

A sunbeam through a gap in the roof or a window of a dark, dusty room; vehicle headlights in mist or fog on a hill road; sunbeams through trees on a misty morning; the beam of a cinema projector; a torch beam through smoke; a torch beam through diluted milk.

Colloids are used in food production, sewage treatment, cosmetics, medicines, oil/water emulsions, mayonnaise, jellies and milk products. Find out what these contain and present a note in class.

Colloids in daily life. Milk is fat droplets and proteins in water (an emulsion). Butter, cheese and jam are gels. Mayonnaise is oil droplets in vinegar, held by egg white or milk (an emulsion). Jellies are gels. Face creams and lotions are oil/water emulsions; shaving foam is a foam. Many syrups and ointments are colloids, so each dose is even. In sewage treatment, alum makes the colloidal dirt particles clump together so that they settle and can be removed. (The full model note is on page 8.)

Dissolved: sugar, salt, lime juice. Not dissolved: basil seeds (sabja), crushed ice, lime pieces.

Give examples of natural drinks: pure water, buttermilk, lemon water, tender coconut water, ……

For how long can these be kept without spoiling?

Natural drinks: fresh fruit juices, sambharam, sugarcane juice, kanji vellam, jeera water, milk.
They keep only for a short time: a few hours at room temperature, about a day in the refrigerator. They contain no preservatives, so microbes soon spoil them. Market drinks have chemicals added so that they keep for a long time.

13 · Stabilisers, preservatives and Table 6.5 (p 128)

Stabilisers സ്റ്റെബിലൈസറുകൾ: chemicals added to artificial drinks to stop the particles settling (brominated vegetable oil, sucrose acetate isobutyrate, glyceryl ester of rosin).
Preservatives പ്രിസർവേറ്റീവുകൾ: substances that keep food from spoiling (from early times: vinegar, salt).

Find some of these substances on the labels of drink bottles and packaged foods, and compare them with the information given.

A typical bottled lemon or orange drink lists: carbonated water, sugar, acidity regulator (338) = phosphoric acid, stabiliser (445) = glyceryl ester of rosin, preservative (211) = sodium benzoate, colour (102) = tartrazine, and added flavour. These match Table 6.5 and the stabiliser box. Practise with the label reader on page 8.

Do artificial drinks have nutritional value? Discuss.

Very little. They are mostly water, sugar (or artificial sweetener), colour, acid and flavour, with no protein, fat, fibre, vitamins or minerals. Their energy comes only from sugar. Natural drinks such as tender coconut water (minerals), buttermilk (protein, calcium) and fresh fruit juice (vitamins) are far more nutritious.

How does adding such chemicals to food and drinks affect the body? Collect information, and organise debates and seminars.

From the textbook's soft-drinks box: artificial sweeteners may create a craving for more sweet things. Sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin and fructose corn syrup, though lower in calories than sugar, cause health problems by raising blood triglycerides and bad fats. Their regular use may lead to non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis and increased hunger, and they raise uric acid in the blood. Some studies show that too many soft drinks cause obesity and tooth decay. Collect more information from labels, your teacher, health workers and the FSSAI. A seminar plan and debate points for both sides are on page 8.
